Library Collections - Stack Relocation Assistants (Summer 2026)

Davidson College Library seeks summer assistance preparing our physical library collections for transition to the new George Lawrence Abernethy Library. This is a temporary summer position, running approximately from May 18 to August 20, 2026 with a commitment of 30-40 hours per week, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We seek individuals who are organized, methodical, and enjoy working on their feet to assist the Library's collections team with a large-scale book selection and transfer process in the Library Annex. Assistants will scan items off their existing shelves and assist in the relocation and reassignment of material to new locations. This high-precision operation will help prepare the library for the final collections move in summer 2027.

Two (2) positions available: this position is open to seasonal staff and students seeking summer employment. Applicants who meet criteria will be interviewed, and potentially hired, on a rolling basis as they apply.

Main Responsibilities:



  • Using mobile tablets and handheld scanners, scan targeted items on current shelves and place items on bookcarts for transport.
  • Straighten and compress items on shelves.
  • Dust / wipe down books; inspect and flag items for physical condition (torn bindings, loose pages) or environmental damage (dust, pests, mold).
  • Review item sequence to ensure it is in proper call number order (training will be provided). Resequence items as necessary, making sure to revise final sequence order within the Library's inventory management systems.
  • Transport selected material to new locations and scan items onto shelves in sequential order.
  • Assist library staff with item deselection, pulling volumes for withdrawal from the system.
  • Accession new items into the system.
  • Other project duties as assigned.


Desired Skills:



  • Keen eye for detail; observant and thorough.
  • Ability to work independently and responsibly;
  • Ability to reason, apply sound judgement, and/or escalate problems as they arise.
  • Intermediate computer skills (Google Suite, MS Office), comfortability handling routine computer processes.
  • Knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system, or a willingness to learn and gain expertise.
  • Physically able to push a book cart of books, lift up to 25 lbs., and climb a lockable stair stool, kneel, or crouch to add or remove books in the stacks (see physical demands below).
