About the Job We invite applications for a full-time Research Professional 3 position to assist with neurodegenerative disease studies. We utilize multiple genetically modified mouse models to study SCA1. A successful candidate will be organized, work independently with minimal guidance, and have a desire to learn and master new techniques. This position will be responsible for regulatory compliance, management of a breeding colony, and oversight of mouse use in the laboratory. Designs, executes, and performs experiments and procedures in support of mouse colony research. Prepares samples for analysis, performs laboratory mouse research tasks, conducts experiments, collects data, prepares documented observations, and evaluates results to establish significance to SCA1. Contributes to the planning, design, and medication of studies and experiments in the research lab setting. Monitors results, reports unusual outcomes, and suggests modifications. Collects, enters, analyzes, and summarizes data. Remains knowledgeable in the research methods, techniques, and developments in the field.
The qualified applicant will be expected to keep detailed records, to manage a complex mouse-breeding colony whose members have many genetic backgrounds, to perform genotyping of genetically modified mice, to supervise other laboratory staff and to interact effectively with lab members and veterinary staff to ensure a high standard of care, organization and regulatory compliance. The position will be available for three years providing growth and an excellent steppingstone. Work Arrangement: The position is expected to work primarily on-site: Molecular Cellular Biology 420 Washington Ave SE, Minneapolis MN 55455
Responsibilities: 80% Designing, planning, and carrying out experiments in mouse colony and research oversight. * Mouse tissue isolation, staining for immunofluorescence, microscopy * DNA/RNA/Protein isolation, PCR, RT-qPCR * Computational and data analysis * Mouse surgery and behavior * Mouse genotyping * Analyzing and reporting research data.
10% Compliance, Safety, and Maintenance * Perform general lab management. * Perform routine laboratory cleanup. * Replenish supplies as needed and ensure laboratories are properly prepared for experiments. * Handle, segregate, and remove hazardous, biological, and chemical waste in compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements. 10% Communication and Reporting
* Work closely with academic and industry partners (including biotech collaborators) to advance translational milestones * Present research findings at lab meetings and scientific conferences * Contribute to manuscript preparation, grant applications, and technical reports
Qualifications
All required qualifications must be documented on application materials. Required Qualifications: * BS/BA in Biology, Neuroscience, or related field and at least four years of relevant experience or a combination of education and experience to equal eight years. * Rodent handling skills * Hands-on experience with molecular biology procedures (DNA, RNA, Protein isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, Western blot) * Previous experience working in a laboratory or research setting * Excellent written and communication skills * Ability to work well within the lab group and with collaborators
Preferred Qualifications * Experience with in-vivo animal research - stereotaxic surgery, AAV injections, implantation * Coordinate / collaborate transgenic rodent lines * Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail * Competence with analysis software to include Matlab, R, GraphPad Prism, Adobe Illustrator and FIJI/Image J * Independent research projects, including extensive reading, experimental design, and execution.
Pay and Benefits
