POSITION SPECIFICS

TheDepartment of Educational Psychology, Counseling,& Special Education within theCollege of Education invitesapplications for an Assistant Teaching Professor of Educationwithprimary responsibilities in teaching, supervision, and advisingin theCounselor Educationprogram.This non-tenure-line position includes the role of Assistant Clinic Coordinator at theHerr Clinic, the program's clinical training facility. Thisis an on-campus, 36-weekfacultyappointment at University Park, with the possibility of renewal and opportunities for summer teaching.

Applicants shoulddemonstrate a recordof success-or clear potential -in teaching, supervision, and advising,and should holda primary professional identity as a counselor educator.Candidatesseekingappointment must alsohave clinicalexperience appropriate foraclinic coordinatorrole.

Responsibilities

  • Teach 3-4 courses peracademicyearinmaster's and doctoral programs, including clinical courses, withability andopenness to teaching undergraduates in thedepartment'sRehabilitation and Human Services program

  • Provide administrative leadership to the Herr Clinic

  • Provide supervision to master's and doctoral students counseling in the Herr Clinicand associated community site partners

  • Conduct crisis assessment interventions and provide on call crisis assessment support

  • Serve as the internship coordinator for theCounselor Educationprogram

  • Advise doctoral students and chair or serve on doctoral committees

  • Develop andmaintainpartnerships between the Herr Clinic, University offices,local schooldistricts,and community organizations

  • Serve on Department, College, and University committees,as appropriate

  • Engageactivelyinprofessionalservice and leadership in the Counselor Educationfield

Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in Counselor Educationfrom a CACREP programby August 2026

  • Eligible forindependentprofessional counselor licensure in Pennsylvaniawithinone year of appointment

  • Meetsthe definition of a CACREP core faculty member(2024 standards)

  • Demonstrated commitment to high quality teaching and advising students

  • Training and experience providing clinical supervision

  • Consistent with the ACA and CRC code of ethics, evidenceof a clear commitment toethical, culturally competent,and innovative clinical training of counselors

  • Strong commitment to mentoringbothprofessional counseling and research identity development among students

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in clinical mental health counseling, clinical mental health and rehabilitation counseling, or clinical rehabilitation counseling

  • Meets the Pennsylvania requirements foran approvedsupervisor(https://www.pacodeandbulletin.gov/Display/pacode?file=/secure/pacode/data/049/chapter49/s49.3.html&d=reduce)

  • Holds dual designation as an independentlicensed professional counselor(LPC)in Pennsylvaniaand certified rehabilitation counselor(CRC)

  • Experience in leadership roles

  • Interestin exploring the use ofartificial intelligence in the training of counselors

  • Experience with school-based mental health and/or mental health with children and youth

Counselor Education Program

Counselor Education at Penn State offers professional preparation at the master's degree level for qualifiedpeoplewishing to become school,clinical mental health, and rehabilitation counselorsin school and community settings.At thedoctorallevel,the programprepares individuals to become university faculty members, researchers, and supervisors. All curriculums blend research based didactic experience with extensive supervised practical application experiences to develop the highest quality professionals. Numbers of admissions in allemphasis areasaremaintainedat levels that allow for quality advisement and mentoring of students by faculty.Counselor Education maintains CACREP-accreditationin three specialty areas(CES, CMHC, School)and is afullyresidentialprogram.

Dr. Edwin L. Herr Clinic

Under the leadership of the Department Head and Clinic Coordinator, theHerr Clinicprovides counseling services to Penn State students, State College Area School District students, and members of the community.The Herr Clinic facility employs state-of-the art technology that allows studentsto develop their clinical skills with recorded and live supervision options,maintainrecords in an electronic behavioral health system,and provide in-person and telehealth services to clients. The program uses the Herr Clinic to train master's and doctoral students in counseling and doctoral students in supervision practice. The Herr Clinic develops andmaintainspartnerships on campus and in the community, as well asprovides educational sessions on topics associated with mental health and well-being.
