Stem Cell Research Associate - 139445

The Department of Neurosciences Center for Neural Repair studies mechanisms of neural repair and regeneration in CNS injury models using a combinatorial approach of stem cell and gene therapies, rehabilitation and axonal guidance.

Incumbent will independently perform routine cell culture (including expansion, passaging and freeze/thaw) of various human embryonic stem cell (hESC) cultures and related functions. Primary responsibilities include the differentiation of hESCs into different central nervous system regional-specific neuronal progenitor cells and neurons, and characterization of neuronal phenotypes by molecular analysis and immunocytochemistry. Responsibilities include maintaining detailed and accurate records, monitoring and maintaining inventory, and performing related molecular biology procedures.

• Theoretical background in molecular biology or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience and knowledge and abilities essential to the successfulperformance of the duties assigned to the position..

• Experience with cell cultures. Working knowledge and excellent sterile technique with proven ability to create standard media supplies. Proven ability to maintain and create primary cell lines.

• Demonstrated ability to accurately keep records of cell lines, source, passage, and genetic manipulations. Proven ability to independently organize, analyze, and interpret data.

• Excellent time management and strong demonstrated organizational and multi-tasking skills. Ability to establish priorities, meet multiple and frequently changing deadlines with flexible schedule to complete experiments/projects.

• Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills that facilitate professional, effective, and courteous interaction with a diverse population.

• Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility with the ability to work well independently or in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community with staff, faculty, researchers, and other lab personnel.

• Knowledge of EH&S procedures for laboratory safety.

• Willingness to adhere to established UCSD guidelines for safety and environmental issues.

• Willingness to work in environment where biological and chemical hazards are present, to perform research on the human embryonic stem cell.

• Willingness to work in a laboratory where animals are used in research, to work with viruses that are infectious to humans, including adeno-associated viruses.

• Experience with nucleic acid techniques.

• Experience with immunocytochemistry techniques.

• Strong computer skills using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email system, and a variety of web-based programs.

• Experience with general lab maintenance, ordering and maintaining equipment and supplies.

• Ability to use various programs for image editing and presentations.

• Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
• Variation of work schedule may be necessary to complete experiments/projects.
• Availability to work on weekends and holidays if needed to complete experiments/projects.
• Must be willing to work with human embryonic stem cells in an animal research related environment.
