Description

Creighton Manning, a GAI Company is seeking a Survey Technician to join their team in their Albany, NY Office.

Survey Technician, under the general guidance of a Survey Analyst or Licensed Land Surveyor, adjusts
and operates surveying instruments, records survey measurements and descriptive data using data
collectors, notes, drawings, and sketches. Survey Technician visit sites to take measurements of the
land and collect data for making maps of the existing conditions.

Essential Functions



  • Perform research at various locations for deeds, maps and easements.
  • Compile information necessary to stake projects for construction, using engineering plans.
  • Position and hold vertical rods, or targets in order to measure angles, distances and elevations.
  • Search for property corners and survey points.
  • Perform level runs.
  • Conduct surveys to ascertain the locations of natural features and human-made structures on the
    earth's surface, underground and under water using electronic distance-measuring equipment
    and other surveying instruments.
  • Collect information needed to carry out surveys, using maps, previous survey data, photographs,
    computer records and other relevant information.
  • Provide assistance in the development of methods and procedures for conducting field surveys.
  • Perform manual labor such as cutting brush for lines, carrying stakes, rebar and other items
    required for surveys


Additional Skills/ Abilities



  • Must have a working knowledge of surveying equipment such as total stations, scanners, and
    data collectors.
  • Must have an understanding of advanced survey technologies, including: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS).
  • Computer skills, including CAD drafting and design.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and carry heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work in varied climates and terrains


General Characteristics



  • Continues to acquire basic skills; good visual and hearing skills, follows procedures; good organizational skills; working in weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, etc.); works with safety in mind, must be flexible with work hours and willingness to travel up to 100% during the week days and occasional weekend travel and/or work, able to do physically demanding work; ability to lift and carry between 25 and 50 lbs. routinely; ability to walk for lengthy periods; wear shirt, long pants and boots as a minimum while on the job

Education



  • H.S. Graduate


Certification/Licensure



  • Driver's License required


Technical Responsibilities



  • Capable of learning survey nomenclature, ability to set up tri-pods, basic equipment usage, usage and care of delicate and expensive equipment; learn the basics of equipment calibration, must have a steady hand and allow for proper measurements required for survey technical work; must be able to occasionally work at heights in certain environmental conditions, wade through water; ride in a boat; swimming skills (Preferred); that may include but not limited to heights, moderate to difficult terrains, aquatic environments/vessels, and inclement weather. These conditions may require certain motor skills (i.e. climbing, hiking, wading, etc.) ability to safely use hand tools, etc.


Management Responsibility



  • Receives close supervision on work assignments.
  • Ability to take direction from a leader.


Communication Skills



  • Possess basic oral and written communication skills; interacts well with other staff, ability to function positively in a team environment.
