About the Role

As US Assistant Controller, you will support the VP US/NY Controller in ensuring the integrity of our external reporting and control environment as it relates to National Grid North America (NGNA) and National Grid USA (NGUSA). You will partner with the NY and NE Assistant Controllers in providing expert input and analysis on accounting matters and influencing successfully business outcomes for the NY & NE operating companies

You will have ownership of the US GAAP accounting policies of NGNA, NGUSA and each of the U.S. operating companies and represent the US Controllership on strategic, cross-functional projects requiring accounting input and support.

This is a highly visible role to C-level executives and provides an awesome opportunity for further career progression.

What You'll Do

* Support the VP US/NY Controller in the delivery of accurate and complete financial statements and supporting information for NGNA and NGUSA
* Review and approval of external financial statements (US GAAP) issued by NGNA and NGUSA, as well as accompanying analytics
* Review and approval of the semi-annual NGUSA IFRS Group Reporting Pack and partnering with the Group Financial Control team on delivery of National Grid Plc's Annual Report
* Review and approval of the semi-annual NY and NE IFRS Finance Briefs
* Review and approval of the annual FERC Form 60 report for Service Company
* Embed a strong controls environment and controls culture across the US Controllership team
* Key contact for the Company's external auditors, driving the annual audits and interim reviews to completion
* Ownership of US GAAP accounting policies impacting NGNA, NGUSA and each of the NY and NE operating companies
* Partner with the Group Financial Control team on the development of National Grid Plc Group-wide IFRS accounting policies
* Lead the implementation of any new IFRS or US GAAP accounting standards, partnering with the NY Assistant Controller and NE Assistant Controller, the NY and NY CFO and FP&A teams to ensure appropriate understanding of how the standard will impact each BU and its reporting of external and internal financial information
* Review and approval of Technical Accounting memos impacting NGNA, NGUSA, the NY and NE operating companies
* Support the NY and NE Assistant Controllers in the review and approval of proposed accounting for any new or amended rate orders issued by regulatory authorities, ensuring consistent application of regulatory accounting guidance across NY and NE
* Lead internal training programs covering Technical Accounting and other relevant topics for the US Finance team
* Oversight and approval of complex accounting judgments and estimates, including, but not limited to, derivatives, pension and other postretirement benefits, environmental remediation, impairments, asset retirement obligations and other PPE and Intangible asset-related matters
* Lead the relationship with key stakeholders within Enterprise Business Services to ensure accurate and timely reporting of financial information of Parent Company, Service Company and NGNA and NGUSA consolidated
* Review and approval of the results of the Annual Allocation Rate study for National Grid Service Company
* Review and approval of the results of Administrative & General capitalization studies and the proposed capitalization rate
* Partner with the NY and NE Assistant Controllers to provide accounting and regulatory support to the broader US Finance function
* Partner with the NY and NE Assistant Controllers to deliver accurate forecast results for the NY and NE Business Units and provide input on monthly analyses of actual results against budget/forecast
* Partner with the NY and NE Assistant Controllers in providing accounting expertise and support to the NY and NE Regulatory teams during the rate case process and other regulatory proceedings, ensuring consistent application of accounting guidance across NY and NE
* Liaise with the Risk Controls and Compliance team in establishing and maintaining an effective control environment. Responsible for review and approval of any control deficiency evaluations and remediation plans for controls owned by the US Assistant Controller team
* Partner with Group Treasury team on any capital market transactions, such as 144A debt issuances, impacting NGNA or NGUSA
* Lead process improvement initiatives impacting the US Controllership

What You'll Need

* Knowledge of IFRS accounting principles and disclosure requirements
* Knowledge of US GAAP accounting principles and disclosure requirements
* Knowledge of industry-specific regulatory accounting principles under US GAAP (ASC 980) and the FERC Uniform System of Accounts
* Experience in external reporting (IFRS, US GAAP and FERC Form 60)
* Transaction and close process management
* Knowledge of governance, risk and controls and compliance standards
* Ability to articulate complex financial topics in business impact terms and able to explain required notes and disclosures to the external accounts
* Ability to bring together commercial and technical acumen (accounting, regulatory, tax etc.)
* Able to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
* Influencing and managing indirectly through matrix structures and dotted reporting lines
* 10+ years' experience + qualified Accountant (Chartered Accountant or CPA) with significant SOX experience

Annual Salary

Brooklyn: $184,000-$216.000

Waltham: $172,000-$202,000
