Overview

The Tufts Department of Biology has diverse research interests and is engaged in cutting-edge biological research in molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, neurobiology, physiology, plant ecology, animal behavior, and conservation biology. The Department of Biology maintains an active research and teaching program on the Medford campus and in various field locales, and trains and advises graduate and undergraduate students as well as post-doctoral fellows.

What You'll Do

This is a grant-funded and limited-term position for one year, and is not eligible for severance pay.
Under close supervision of Principal Investigator, conducts a variety of routine experiments following established procedures and protocols, which may include performing assays, microscopy, dissections, DNA extractions, and other laboratory techniques. May also record test results, analyze data using basic statistics, maintain laboratory equipment and supplies, and monitor animal colonies. Will assist and collaborate with PI on projects related to the Blue Nature Alliance science delivery team, and related projects in the lab. Trains and monitors students and other laboratory staff on relevant research protocols, as-needed. This position will be 35 hr/wk with all of the normal university benefits. Confidentiality and trust are necessary and expected in this role. Specific responsibilities will be derived on the job but may include (and are not limited to) the essential functions listed below. Desired skills include communication & organization, lab safety & organization, aquarium skills including husbandry and maintenance/plumbing, microscopy. Technical skills require familiarity with Google suite, Microsoft suite, Zoom.
  • Conducts routine experiments following appropriate protocols and procedures to achieve results.
  • Attend project related meeting and lab meetings
  • Records results and maintains accurate records of experiments. Performs limited data interpretation and assists with basic statistics and analysis.
  • Works with lab coordinator to maintain laboratory equipment and orders/keeps inventory of supplies relevant to active projects.
  • Trains and coordinates work for undergraduate research and work study students incoming orientation, onboarding, and ensuring effective coverage of active projects.

Basic Requirements:
Knowledge and experience typically acquired by:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related science
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques and procedures
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Up to one year laboratory experience

Pay Range

Minimum $20.50, Midpoint $24.40, Maximum $28.30

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
