Job Summary

Instruct and share knowledge of graphic design and teach basic skills of Adobe Photoshop, design principals, and marketing to 6th through 12th grade students with varying skill levels as part of Milwaukee Recreations Summer Exciting Camps for Enrichment and Learning (EXCEL).

Summer EXCEL brief summary and background:

Milwaukee Recreations Summer EXCEL (Exciting Camps for Enrichment and Learning) program provides enriching learning experiences for youth during the summer. Summer EXCEL programs typically take place at locations that operate CLC and Safe Place summer programs or at alternate facilities. The focus of MPS Summer EXCEL is to provide youth with a safe space for youth to participate in academic, recreation enrichment and youth development opportunities

During the summer, Summer Recreation Programs (Summer CLCs and Safe Places) at MPS elementary and K-8 schools operate from Monday through Friday from 7:00a.m.-6:00p.m. and middle/high school locations operate from 11:00a.m.-6:00p.m. Each summer program location serves an average of 55 to 100 or more participants daily. At elementary and K-8 locations, academic enrichment programming typically occurs in the morning before lunch. Summer Recreation Programs at MPS CLCs and Safe Places also provide daily meals and/or snacks.

Position Summary

Summer EXCEL Graphic Design Instructor will provide graphic design camps at Gaenslen School. This a part-time, summer program-only position. The Summer EXCEL Graphic Design Instructor is expected to work 12 to 16 hours per week (3-4 hours per day, 4 days per week), Monday through Thursday during summer program academic enrichment programming from June 29th July 23rd, 2025

GOALS for Instruction Include:

The instructor will deliver instruction to students in a computer lab setting. A daily lesson plan will be taught. Students will learn as a group and complete practice work independently.

1. The student will learn about Graphic Design concepts through the software Adobe Photoshop including tools, techniques, and work flow concepts.

2. The student will be taught how to make a variety of visual graphics including social media posts, composite imagery, and photo retouching.

3. The student will learn about careers in graphic design and marketing.

4. The student will experience the fast-paced world of graphic design and marketing, learning techniques and skills and producing work with a fast turnaround.

5. Each student will have a Final Project which will be completed on the final day of class.

Students will be provided with the following materials for class:

A. Desktop computer for use for the duration of the class

B. Each student will receive their final project and an additional project of their choice printed, in color, on the final day of class

Supervision Required

Reports to the Recreation Supervisor of the Summer EXCEL Camps

Job Requirements

21 years of age or older.

Instructor of Graphic Design.

At least 2 years of teaching, graphic design and working with students of all ages.

Able to meet all scheduling needs of the required position.

Required Trainings:

Mandated Reporter Training (provided)

Child Maltreatment Training (Provided)

Preferred Experience

Previous work experience in a school setting with a diverse population.

Experience teaching, organizing, and leading.

CPR/First Aid training.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Ability to problem solve.

Ability to develop lesson plans.

Ability and willingness to communicate and engage students.

Ability to supervise and manage groups of students.

Enjoys working with students of all ages.

Pay, Benefits, and Work Schedule

This a part-time, summer program only position. EXCEL 3D Printing Instructor is expected to work from 1:00p.m-3:00p.m., four days per week, Monday through Thursday, as part the Summer EXCEL program from June 30th - July 24th . Work schedule includes prep and instruction hours plus four additional hours weekly for program supply acquisition
