Employment Duration: 3 months
Under supervision of the ACC5 Manager, guided by the policies and procedures of Ambulatory Services, and in collaboration with Clinical Nursing Staff, the Hospital Assistant III assists in the delivery of care to patients in the Heart & Vascular Center ambulatory group practices.
Responsibilities include performing and assisting with a variety of clinical procedures, reconciling patients' medications, and communicating health care maintenance reminders to support positive care outcomes. The incumbent performs assigned patient care and laboratory procedures in support of primary or specialty care services.
The position requires the ability to assist across all Heart & Vascular Services, including:
- Cardiology
- Vascular Surgery
- CT Surgery
- Pre-Heart & Lung Transplant
- Mechanical Support Services
The incumbent is required to adhere to the Living PRIDE Standards and Telephone and House Standards as adopted by the Medical Center.
Key Responsibilities:
- Obtain patient vital signs, height, weight, pain screening, and chief complaint; may room patients
- Set up basic procedure equipment (e.g., biopsy, PAP)
- Assist with procedures
- Perform disinfection of instruments and clinical treatment areas (SPD training required)
- Work with interpreting services to facilitate interpreter participation for medical appointments and document interpreter use as appropriate
- Review medication lists
- Order and stock supplies
- Obtain specimens and perform Point of Care Testing (POCT), including QA/QC and EKGs
- Perform phlebotomy (with certification, if applicable)
- Update mandatory logs (e.g., temperature log)
- Abstract medical records
- Demonstrate proficiency in Cadence
- Obtain complex authorizations
- Facilitate referrals to other providers as ordered by the physician
- Perform other duties as assigned

- Active American Heart Association CPR certification
- One year of experience working in a healthcare setting
- Experience working in a busy clinic setting
- Knowledge and abilities essential to successful performance of assigned duties
- Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program
- Current Medical Assisting certification
- Bilingual or multilingual skills
- California State CPT-1 certification
- Experience with insurance verification, medical record data abstraction, or patient financial services
- One year of Medical Assisting experience
Required Qualifications
