About the Job

The Summer Undergraduate Research Assistant position is a temporary summer job in the Gradilone Laboratory at The Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota, supporting ongoing biomedical research projects focused on liver diseases and cancer biology, including the role of primary cilia in cellular signaling and tumor progression. During this 12-week summer appointment, the student will gain hands-on experience in a research laboratory environment, assisting with experiments, learning modern laboratory techniques, and contributing to ongoing research projects. Under supervision, the student will assist with experimental procedures, data collection, and basic data analysis. This position provides an opportunity to expand knowledge of biomedical research, develop laboratory skills, and gain exposure to translational cancer research. The employer retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position as needed.

Responsibilities

* Assist laboratory members with basic experimental procedures in molecular and cellular biology.
* Perform routine laboratory tasks including sample preparation, reagent preparation, and maintaining laboratory organization.
* Assist with cell culture experiments and basic molecular biology techniques.
* Participate in data collection and documentation of experimental results.
* Maintain accurate laboratory records and follow established laboratory protocols.
* Participate in lab meetings and scientific discussions when appropriate.
* Assist with preparation of figures, presentations, or posters summarizing research activities.

Work location options include working fully remote, partially remote, or entirely in the office and are based on the work of the position. Some on-site work may be necessary for certain positions, even those designated as fully remote. This position has been designated as eligible for Flexible Work Profile One.
Flexible Work Profile One, Office/Lab-Based - is expected to work primarily on-site in the office/lab. Only occasionally and inconsistently working remotely. Your office will be located at The Hormel Institute in Austin, Minnesota. The Hormel Institute management retains the right to modify flexible work arrangement agreements on a temporary or permanent basis for any reason at any time.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

* High school diploma or equivalent.
* Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in biology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, or a related scientific field.
* Interest in biomedical research and laboratory work.
* Ability to follow detailed instructions and laboratory protocols.
* Strong organizational and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

* Previous laboratory coursework in biology, chemistry, or related disciplines.
* Prior research experience in an academic laboratory.
* Students entering their junior or senior year of undergraduate studies.
* Minimum GPA of 3.0.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

* Must be comfortable working in environments that may include close contact with animals, animal byproducts and related materials.
* Exposure to varying temperatures, outdoor environments, and potential odors or airborne particles related to animal care.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $20.00 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Student workers are eligible to participate in the Student Health Benefit Plan, if they maintain 6 or more eligible course credits within a given semester. The same applies for Undergraduate Students, Graduate Assistants, Residents, Fellows and Interns.
