Position Summary:

The Medical College of Wisconsin's Division of Pediatric Cardiology Heart Failure/Heart Transplant Program is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant toprovide primary or specialty medical care within the inpatient and outpatient setting. This position is located in Milwaukee, WI at the Children's Wisconsin hospital campus.TheAdvanced Practice Provider(APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.

Position Highlights:
  • APP care coordinator to provide patient care to complex pediatric patients and young adults with heart failure, ventricular assist devices, heart transplants candidates and recipients. Will work within a multi-disciplinary team, including cardiologists, surgeons, intensivists, APPs, nurses, pharmacists, social work, psychology, and nutrition. The role will include care coordination for both inpatient and outpatient management.

  • High-level overview of patient population: Children and young adults with congenital heart disease or cardiomyopathy with heart failure, including those who have advanced heart failure requiring mechanical circulatory support. Children and young adults who require evaluation for heart transplantation and those who have received a heart transplantation.

  • Any mandatory skillset/procedures: Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team and provide care coordination for highly complex patients.

  • Required: Locations the position may work in: Milwaukee Campus and Appleton Campus

  • Team dynamic (faculty/APP ratio, other providers/clinicians they may interact for clinical support, etc.): There are 2 physicians with anticipation for 3 physician hired by end of 2026. Currently 3 APPs: 2 full time and 1 part time FTE. Will work with multi-disciplinary transplant team members including cardiothoracic surgeons, perfusionists, surgical APPs, ICU physicians, nurses, dietician, social work, psychologist, pharmacist and clinic staff.

  • Will interact with other subspecialities including ICU, surgery, infectious disease, GI, pulmonology, neurology.

  • Will support teaching and academic pursuits, including attending conferences, but not required.

Schedule:
  • Schedule will include four 10-hour days with anticipate 2 days of inpatient rounding and 2 days of clinic coverage, including advanced heart failure clinic, heart transplant clinic, muscular dystrophy clinic and VAD clinic.

  • One weekday call per week, One weekend a month of inpatient rounding and call, rotating holidays (expected 2 holidays/year)

  • Call ratio 1:4

  • Full-Time

  • Salaried (Exempt)

Department/Division Highlights:

The heart failure/heart transplant team is in a period of growth. This role is being added to compliment the current team.

Qualifications:

Preferred Experience:

  • Strongly prefer experience as an APP with pediatric patients, either in acute care or intensive care, and preferably within cardiac ology or other chronic illness specialties.

  • Additional experience in solid organ transplant, heart failure or MCS experience appreciated, but not required experience preferred.

Minimum Education:

  • Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing from a nationally accredited organization.

  • Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies from an ARC-PA-accredited organization.

Minimum Requirements:

Advanced Practice Nurse/ Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner

  • Wisconsin RN License

  • Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License

  • Certification Requirements:

    • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

    • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)

    • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) required within 6 months of start date

    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 6 months of start date

    • DEA registration

Physician Assistant

  • Wisconsin Physician Assistant License

  • Certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)

  • Certification Requirements

    • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

    • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)

    • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) required within 6 months of start date

    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 6 months of start date
