We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Washington D.C. for a Lobbyist, Director 1, Life Science (Hybrid) on our Advocacy team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Washington, DC office, requiring 3 days a week in the office.

This position will maintain effective liaison with designated federal agencies, health care
organizations, and coalitions involved with health-related programs. This
position will focus on life sciences and market regulation, advancing policies
related to FDA and FTC oversight, drug and device regulation, program
integrity, and expanding access to care in underserved and priority populations. Advocate for AMA policies and positions to the appropriate government officials
and represent AMA at related health care associations and coalitions. Ensure relevant
information on government programs and coalition activities is brought to the
attention of appropriate AMA officials.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Health Care Policy Development & Advocacy

    • Identify and analyze emerging federal health care policy issues related to life sciences and market regulation, advancing policies related to FDA and FTC oversight, drug and device regulation, program integrity, and expanding access to care in underserved and priority populations.
    • Prioritize issues in alignment with AMA Advocacy objectives and federal administration interests.
    • Develop key issue objectives and strategic communication plans, collaborating across the AMA Advocacy Group and broader AMA to shape messaging for policymakers, stakeholders, and others.
    • Formulate and execute strategies addressing identified policy issues.
    • Prepare comprehensive, evidence-based comment letters to influence Executive Branch and federal administration policies, incorporating detailed analysis of life sciences regulation, market oversight, expanding access to care, scope of practice, program integrity, and other key health care policy areas.
    • Engage with policymakers to clarify, refine, and ensure the incorporation of AMA recommendations into federal policy decisions.
    • Support development of targeted web and social media initiatives for education and advocacy.

    External Collaboration & Relationship Management

    • Initiate and maintain liaisons with federal administration officials and national health professional organizations, to promote AMA's regulatory agenda.
    • Advocate for AMA positions to stakeholders and federal officials and communicate relevant information to AMA colleagues. Cultivate and manage relationships with key external stakeholders in Washington, DC.
    • Represent AMA's positions before external organizations, providing updates to AMA leadership.
    • Monitor federal program activities to inform agencies of AMA policies, obtain timely information on agency and regulatory developments, and identify areas of mutual interest.
    • Support AMA Councils and Committees by providing timely updates on federal regulatory policy developments; assist in the development of policy recommendations for federal health programs.
    • Respond to requests from AMA Headquarters for information, and assistance with meeting appointments with federal officials, conference participation and speaker coordination.
    • Provide liaison support for constituent and component medical societies and specialty societies.

    Subject Matter Expertise & Outreach

    • Monitor federal regulatory activities and the ongoing work of federal programs.
    • Prepare and deliver briefings for AMA leaders representing the Association in official meetings.
    • Lead coalition meetings and make public presentations on behalf of AMA.
    • Serve as a subject matter expert, educating colleagues and stakeholders on regulatory proposals, issues affecting patients and physicians.
    • Provide subject matter expertise to support congressional colleagues in advocating AMA's positions in Congress.
    • Apply existing AMA principles and policies in developing novel ideas and support AMA business units in understanding federal policymaking and its legislative and regulatory implications for AMA members

    May include other responsibilities as assigned

  • REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Bachelor's degree required; law degree or master's degree strongly preferred.
    2. Minimum of 10 years of relevant policy experience; minimum of 5 years' experience working with a member of Congress, FDA or regulatory agency, consulting or law firm, national health care organization, or national medical specialty society on federal government health issues is required.
    3. Expertise in federal health care regulation, including FDA oversight and market regulation, is required.
    4. Strong understanding of FDA, FTC, HRSA, and CMS regulatory functions, relevant priorities, and key issues impacting market regulation, life sciences, workforce, and expanding access to care is preferred.
    5. Demonstrated track record of collaborative work in a broad matrixed environment, actively contributing to team-driven management of complex, cross-cutting topics and strategic priorities is preferred.
    6. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships both internally and externally, preferred.
    7. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including a proven ability to translate complex, substantive information into presentations, letters, and reports tailored to executive-level decision-making is preferred.
    8. Some travel required.

    This role is an exempt position, and the salary range for this position is $180,249.25 - $239,416.60. This is the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's pay within the salary range will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to business consideration and geographical location, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
