Primary Purpose of Department
The primary mission of Police and Public Safety is to provide a safe and secure environment supporting the University's pursuit of research and academic excellence. Our highly dedicated law enforcement professionals continually strive to reduce crime, accidents and loss of property through investigative processes and effective community partnerships.
Primary Purpose of Position
This is first-line supervisory or managerial law enforcement work at a University campus or other State facility. With full powers of arrest, employees enforce the laws of the State and the United States Government. Employees have law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction. Work involves supervision and/or management of a unit of officers or other Departmental personnel in their responses to routine calls, emergencies, and other law enforcement services provided. Employees evaluate appropriateness of officer responses; designate assignments; direct needed resources; and interpret laws, ordinances, and Department policies and procedures. Duties may include orientation and training of officers, inspections of officers and/or other Departmental personnel on a shift, conducting pre-shift briefings, review of all reports and investigations accomplished during a shift, activity coordination, discipline, conducting performance reviews, and providing input concerning operational planning.
Summary of Position Responsibilities

  • Analyzes situations and allows exceptions to policy. Researches and writes operational policy and procedure.
  • Assists in developing specialized plans; conducts research. Identifies community needs.
  • Demonstrates understanding of criminal trends and how they relate to the community.
  • Administers follow-up case assignments. Analyzes cases to identify trends, assign cases, and develop prevention programs.
  • Approves documentation for submission to Records Section. Researches and prepares written analysis of comprehensive issues.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • A minimum of an Associate's Degree (or sixty (60) hours of college credit) and four (4) years of sworn law enforcement experience.
  • Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer.
  • Candidates must be employed by the UNC Charlotte Police Department as an Officer for a minimum of two (2) years.
  • Candidates must not have received a written warning or suspension within the previous eighteen (18) months from the posting date of the vacancy.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or higher is preferred.
Necessary Certifications/Licenses

  • Certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
  • Valid Driver's License Needed for position.
