Position SummaryWelcomes researchers from UNM and across the
world at the Access Desk for the Center for Southwest Research & Special
Collections in Zimmerman Library. Works closely with CSWR staff to retrieve and
shelve CSWR materials for researcher use. Answers routine and directional
questions, in person and by phone. Performs clerical and customer service
functions. Conducts searches for missing items. Processes duplication projects
and requests by a variety of means including scanning and digitizing. Performs
a variety of digitization projects as directed by archivists. Assists archivists
with basic processing of CSWR archival materials; may work on preservation and
conservation. Follows archival policies and practices in the handling of unique,
fragile and rare materials. May assist with basic research/reference inquiries.
May assist with training and supervising of new student employees. Special
projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Currently enrolled at UNM for a minimum of 6 credit hours during the normal school year.
  • Or currently enrolled at UNM for a minimum of 3 credit hours during the summer.

  • Excellent interpersonal/customer service skills; a successful candidate should enjoy interacting with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Good technical, office and organizational skills. Ability to carry out detailed tasks accurately and completely.
  • Ability to work independently. Ability to apply appropriate archival and security policies and procedures.
  • Interest in working with archival and rare materials and materials emphasizing the history and cultures of the Southwest.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • The following skills are beneficial but not necessary to be considered a qualified applicant: Knowledge of Southwestern and/or Latin American history. Knowledge of Library of Congress call number system. Knowledge of archives or special collections. Library or archival experience. Ability to speak Spanish or a Native American language.
