Summary
Assures total compliance with TJC and CAP guidelines during all procedures. Must handle biohazardous and infectious material while following proper safety precautions. Works cooperatively with all hospital and laboratory staff through verbal and written communications in order to resolve problems, exchange information, receive instructions, establish protocols, and process information concerning cases.

Essential Functions
PATIENT SAFETY: Follows established hospital and departmental precautions and procedures in the performance of all job duties to ensure a safe work environment for patients and others to include as appropriate:
* Demonstrates appropriate hand hygiene
* Demonstrates use of two patient identifiers
* Demonstrates effective communication "hand offs" between providers, shifts, departments, etc.
* Demonstrates use of proper precautions including use of appropriate personal protective equipment
* Is responsible to and receives direction from the management team, which may consist of the administrator, manager or supervisor.
* Assures total compliance with JC and CAP guidelines and adheres to them during all procedures and policies.
* Embeds tissue for the histologists.
* Coverslips slides and aids in signing-out cases for the pathologists.
* Responsible for glass slide and paraffin block filing in histology and pathology.
* Assists the pathologists' assistants/grossing techs in the grossing room and aids in specimen collection for pathology.
* Under the direction of the AP Operations Manager and the Chief of Pathology, accessions pathology specimens.
* Under the direction of the AP Operations Manager and the Chief of Pathology, assists the PA/grossing techs and pathologists in grossing pathology specimens, if qualified under CAP regulations.
* Performs and/or assists with gynecological and non-gynecological cytology specimens.
* Attends and participates in classes, meetings, committees and other continuing education as appropriate to maintain and enhance professional job knowledge and/or job skills.
* Assists pathologists with digital photography and preparation for multidisciplinary conferences in the hospital.
* Maintains a clean and safe work area according to infection control and chemical hygiene guidelines.
* Maintains equipment according to formal maintenance program in the department.
* Maintains and labels stains and reagents according to department and CAP guidelines.
* Fills client supply orders.
* Responsible for specimen send-outs, including slide and block requests and returns.
* Ensures accurate transcription of patient reports, including histology and immunohistochemistry results, according to department guidelines.
* Ensures proper disposal of wet tissue and chemicals according to department guidelines.

Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent required and Associate's Degree preferred

Experience
Hospital Laboratory experience 3-5 years preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Staff adheres to all I C.A.R.E. Standards.
- Must demonstrate annual CAP competencies in any area that they work.
