What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a highly driven and experienced Tool & Die Associate Manager to lead operations in our Tooling Shop, supporting high-pressure die casting (HPDC) activities at Gigafactory Austin. This position is crucial in managing the fabrication, modification, repair, and lifecycle maintenance of die casting tools that enable the production of structural components for Tesla's cutting-edge vehicles. You will be responsible for leading a team of tool and die specialists and team leaders, executing a wide range of die-related activities including new tool builds, engineering change implementation, mid-life rebuilds, end-of-life refurbishments, and insert repairs. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, high-accountability environment and is proficient in standardized work practices, production planning, and team development.
What You'll Do
- Supervise day-to-day operations in the Tooling Shop, ensuring safety, quality, and output targets are met
- Develop and execute daily and weekly plans aligned with production and engineering schedules to meet key project milestones and deadlines
- Lead a team of tool and die makers and team leads, providing mentorship, direction, and performance management
- Drive standardized work practices across all die maintenance and repair activities to ensure repeatability, quality, and efficiency
- Oversee fabrication of new HPDC dies, from machining through final assembly and validation
- Manage execution of mid-life die rebuilds and end-of-life refurbishments, reducing unplanned downtime and extending die lifecycle
- Implement engineering changes in existing dies based on feedback from design, quality, and production teams
What You'll Bring
- Minimum 8 years of experience in Tool and Die operations, with at least 4 years in a leadership or supervisory role
- Hands-on experience in HPDC tooling: fabrication, preventive maintenance, and refurbishment
- Proven ability to create detailed activity plans (daily/weekly) to manage resources and meet production and project targets
- Proficiency in standardized work methods, job instructions, and process control systems
- Strong understanding of precision machining, tool steels, heat treatment, and assembly of die components
- Able to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and CAD models
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and team leadership skills
