Position Highlights

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery is seeking a Research Program Administration Officer III. The primary purpose of this position is to administer external and internal research programs within the department. The successful candidate will lead program strategy, program management, implementation of the methodology, regulatory compliance, and support for the department's research programs. This new position collaborates with principal investigators, research staff, and University units to ensure compliance with terms and conditions. This position is responsible for operational and supervisory support for the research programs. Additionally, the candidate will plan, develop, and maintain procedures, equipment, and policies that affect all facets of research. The position will report directly to the Department Chair. Providing advisory and consultative support for various departmental initiatives is a key portion of this role.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conducts funded research projects with multiple investigators; maintains partnerships with various other UA divisions.
  • Navigates the IRB process through consultations.
  • Navigates regulatory compliance advice for departmental projects.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day activities of selected research programs.
  • Provides policy and procedure interpretation to research faculty and staff.
  • Oversee compliance with policies of university, federal and community at large such as Human Subjects Committee to ensure that programs are in compliance with university, NIH regulations, and community standards.
  • Assist the department with development of SOPs for the University
  • Provide structure for clinical coordinators.
  • Guide the work of student researchers and projects.
  • Perform statistical analyses.
  • Lead coordination efforts for research projects with multiple investigators.
  • Consults with faculty on grant writing and research management including federal grants and extramural funded studies.
  • Monitor and manage the implementation and management of internal and external research awards.
  • Monitor and evaluate the progress of research programs.
  • Responsible for initial research program recruitment and staffing.
  • Mentor research staff, and address questions and issues that arise during research conduct.

Assist management and leadership with the following:

  • Monitor budgets, prepare recommendations for budgetary allowances and meet with business office to ensure fiscal responsibility for research budgets.
  • Approve budgeted expenses.
  • Responsible for human resources position distributions for research faculty and staff, including cost-sharing calculations and effort reporting.
  • Complete preliminary analyses as well as develop in-house databases in Redcap.
  • Maintain program initiatives, identify barriers, suggest solutions, and communicate regularly with program principal investigators and leadership.
  • Directly supervises selected research staff.
  • Provide oversight in conjunction with departmental leadership when developing operational processes, workflows, and policies; develop and implement plans, schedules, and standard operating procedures.
  • Interface with multiple levels of the organization and external entities to discuss the operational and planning needs of the department.
  • Provide consultative support for PIs navigating regulatory processes and facilitate transitions to College of Medicine resources for ongoing support.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience with clinical trial regulatory rules and regulations (both institutional and federal).
  • Ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Research and personnel management experience.
  • Knowledge of university procedures/policies regarding Sponsored Projects and IRB.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with data management or database (RedCap, Access, etc.) and competence in a statistical software package (SAS, SPSS, Stata, or R).
  • Grant writing and management skills in order to oversee NIH partnerships.
  • Experience communicating with communities in Southern Arizona.
