Texas Performing Arts (TPA) is the performing arts presenting and producing program of the University of Texas at Austin (UT). The most active university-based performing arts center in the U.S., TPA is an anchor institution in Austin's arts, cultural, and entertainment landscape. TPA operates venues on the UT campus including Austin's largest theater, Bass Concert Hall. Its public programs include Broadway in Austin; an international season of dance, theater, music and more; and the Texas Welcomes series of popular touring artists. TPA is part of UT's College of Fine Arts and engages students across the university in creative experiences.

Purpose

The Director of Programming ensures that Texas Performing Arts presents an exciting and wide-ranging program of performances that meet its public service, educational, and revenue goals. The director works closely with TPA team members and partners to ensure high quality presentations that increase TPA's positive impact on audiences, artists, students, and the performing arts field at large.

Responsibilities

Programming Leadership and Strategy:

  • Develop and implement programming strategies that align with TPA's artistic, public service, educational, and revenue goals.
  • Maximize the productive occupancy of TPA's owned/operated venues and engage other on- or off-campus venues as needed.
  • Provide leadership to the TPA programming team to support efficient and effective work across the organization and with external partners.
  • Lead the programming of the Broadway in Austin series in coordination with TPA's series partner.
  • Lead the programming of the Texas Welcomes series of national touring artists.
  • Lead the programming of the Performing Arts Season of curated international productions, contemporary and classical performance, and new work development.
  • Lead venue sales strategy, securing rental engagements that maximize appropriate use of TPA's facilities.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with local, national, and international agents, managers, co-promoters, and peer venues. Identify and develop long-lead or innovative projects that advance TPA's programmatic and financial goals.

Programming Management:

  • Provide clear, timely, and complete programming information to TPA departments and external partners throughout all phases of the programming and presenting process, from initial event inquiry to final settlement.
  • Advise and support the successful marketing, communications, and ticketing of programmed engagements. Monitor and manage revenue goals and inventory with TPA colleagues.
  • Advise and support the successful event operations, guest experience, and technical production of programmed engagements. Maintain awareness of event advance processes as participate as required.
  • Create, maintain, and update programming budgets and projections.
  • Lead the strategic management of the venue calendars to maximize the utilization and impact of available dates. With the programming team, provide availabilities and manage holds.
  • With the programming team, prepare and submit offers and negotiate terms. Provide booking confirmations and event information to all TPA departments. Oversee the contract, settlement, and payment processes.
  • Develop and negotiate opportunities for artist engagement with students, members/donors, and other communities that TPA serves.

Required Qualifications
  • At least ten (10) years of progressively responsible programming experience at a multi-disciplinary performing arts center.
  • Experience programming an annual Broadway subscription series with a national partner entity or consortium.
  • Possess an established national network of agents, co-promoters, and peer venues.
  • Experience with direct, co-presentation, and rental booking models.
  • Experience with all genres and forms of live arts and entertainment, including popular touring artists, fine arts, and Broadway productions.
  • Demonstrated experience accurately forecasting consumer demand and managing business risk.
  • Have demonstrated competencies in: Accuracy and Attention to Detail, Effective Communication (written and spoken), Initiative, Interpersonal Relationships, and Problem Solving.
Preferred Qualifications
  • More than the minimum required years of experience.
  • Experience programming a theatrical venue with capacity of 2,800 or greater.
  • Experience programming in venues owned or operated by a university or public entity.
  • Interest in and strong commitment to the mission and programs of Texas Performing Arts and the University of Texas.
  • Relevant professional education or credentials.

Working Conditions
  • This position is 100% on-site at Texas Performing Arts and requires full-time residence in the greater Austin, Texas, area.
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Prolonged screen time.
  • Frequent telephone and virtual meetings.
  • Fast-paced environment requiring multi-tasking and expedient responses.
Work Shift
  • Evening, weekend, and holiday work, including "on-call" times, are required in connection with performances and events. Working shifts may include extended daily hours in connection with performances and events. Work will exceed 40 hours per week at peak times. A compensatory time program is provided.
  • Occasional travel, including weekend or overnight travel, may be required.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
