Senior Software Engineer- AI Are you passionate about building AI-driven software that transforms how professionals work? As a Senior Software Engineer - AI, you will play a key role in developing intelligent systems that power the next generation of expert solutions across legal, tax, risk, and compliance domains. About The Role: As a Senior Software Engineer - AI, you will collaborate with a cross-functional team of product managers, UX designers, and engineers to design, build, and deliver AI-powered solutions. Build AI-Driven Systems:
Architect and implement advanced AI systems, including multi-component pipelines, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and custom AI agents with multi-step reasoning. Integrate AI models into production software through robust APIs and scalable data pipelines. Adapt AI models and techniques to specialized domains, tailoring solutions for expert systems in areas such as legal, tax, and compliance. Design and deploy AI-powered workflows and integrations tailored to customer use cases, including bespoke automation pipelines and integration scripts. Proficiently work with document file formats including PDF, .docx, .csv, and .xlsx as part of data ingestion and processing pipelines.
Innovate:
Evaluate and prototype cutting-edge AI techniques to solve business challenges Conduct proof-of-concept projects for new AI-driven features Stay current with AI research and emerging technologies Apply prompt engineering and workflow optimization techniques to improve output quality and reliability across diverse document types and legal use cases. Develop familiarity with hallucination detection techniques, citation generation, and multi-round validation workflows for AI outputs in high-stakes domains.
Provide Technical Leadership:
Break down functional requirements into scalable technical specifications Mentor junior engineers and facilitate technical discussions Contribute to MLOps and LLMOps practices, both in design and implementation Act as a thought leader, sharing expertise in company-wide forums and representing the organization in emerging technology areas Translate customer feedback and field insights into structured input for product roadmap and engineering priorities. Contribute to internal documentation, reusable solution templates, and team knowledge-sharing.
Ensure Quality & Operations:
Implement comprehensive testing frameworks and monitoring systems for AI model performance Ensure compliance with ethical AI principles and security standards Conduct systems analysis and recommend operational improvements Validate new capabilities against real-world legal workflows in collaboration with internal legal teams and external partners.
Collaborate Across Functions:
Work closely with AI researchers, engineers, designers and product teams to translate AI capabilities into real-world applications. Optimize AI system performance considering factors like latency and resource usage Support application feature enhancements through AI capabilities Operate fluently across technical and non-technical audiences, translating complex requirements into engineering specifications and communicating technical capabilities as clear strategic value. Support pre-sales and business development efforts through technical demonstrations, use case scoping, and early-stage prototyping.
About You: You are a fit for the position of Senior Software Engineer- AI if your background includes: Required Skills and experience:
Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent experience 5+ years of experience in software engineering; at least 2 years focused on AI/ML Proficiency in Python and experience with AI/ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) Strong understanding of machine learning principles, evaluation, and system design Knowledge of MLOps and the end-to-end lifecycle of AI-powered software applications Experience integrating AI models into production systems using APIs and data pipelines Experience consuming and building REST APIs, including authentication flows (OAuth, M2M, SSO) and enterprise security/ISRM review processes. Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment Strong communication skills and experience working in cross-functional teams Strong prompt engineering skills with the ability to design, iterate, and optimize LLM prompts for specialized domain tasks. JD or legal background, or equivalent experience working directly within or alongside legal teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with AI-driven systems, agent-based architectures, or AI APIs from providers like OpenAI and Anthropic. Knowledge of vector databases, embeddings, or search-based AI. Domain knowledge in legal, tax, or accounting A portfolio of projects demonstrating creativity and skill building solutions with LLMs Experience with legal AI platforms (e.g., CoCounsel, Harvey, Ironclad, Kira, or similar). Experience building or configuring contract review, NDA triage, or playbook-driven review systems. JavaScript proficiency; experience with HTML/CSS or front-end tooling is a plus. Comfort presenting at conferences, client workshops, or internal knowledge-sharing sessions.

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The base compensation range varies across locations. Eligible office location(s) for this role include one or more of the following: New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and/or Irvine, CA; McLean, VA; Washington, DC. The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $127,000 USD - $235,000 USD. For any eligible US locations, unless otherwise noted, the base compensation range for this role is $110,000 USD - $204,200 USD. For Ontario, Canada, the base compensation range for this role is $100,000 CAD - $145,000 CAD. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs. This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance.
