Genesis10 is currently seeking a Platform Design Engineer for a contract position with a Global Industrial Equipment Manufacturer located in Erie, PA. This is a 12+ month contract opportunity. Pay: $45.00 / HR W2 This role is responsible for supporting the design and development of platform structures for locomotive applications. The ideal candidate will conduct packaging studies, ensure compliance with relevant standards, and provide on-site, shop-floor support for design development and successful builds in a heavy fabrication environment. Responsibilities:
- Design and development of Platform and its components for locomotive application using sound Engineering principles, adhering to business standards/ processes and as per program requirements
- Assist in developing concepts, evaluating design options, identifying potential risks, and contributing to mitigation plans
- Participate in and support technical design reviews by preparing required documentation and data's
- Prepare, maintain, and organize technical documentation in accordance with engineering policies and quality procedures
- Work closely with the Platform Senior Engineers to carry out measurements from Donor Locomotives, take reference photographs, and document critical details during build and validation activities
- Coordinate with assemblers and shop technicians to understand assembly sequences, component fit-ups, packaging constraints, and other practical build considerations
- Connect with shop engineers to execute assigned tasks, collect required inputs, and assist in build-related engineering activities
- Interpret 3D CAD models and physical built units to identify and highlight deviations, interferences, or mismatches between design and actual build
- Measure and record weld size, weld type and accessibility details as required for design validation and improvement
- Support prototype builds, installation checks, and packaging studies by capturing data, validating dimensions, and reporting issues to the core engineering team
- Assist in preparing engineering reports, build observations, and deviation summaries as needed
- Ensure that all tasks are executed with attention to safety, quality, and compliance with engineering standards
- Support resolution of supplier and field-related issues as directed by the Senior Engineers
- Collaborate effectively with cross-functional stakeholders across the organization
- Provide timely communication on significant observations, risks, or progress updates
Requirements:
- Bachelor's / master's degree in mechanical engineering with minimum 2-3 years' working experience in the Mechanical design/ Heavy fabrication area
Desired skills:
- Strong attention to detail, especially in measurements, documentation, and build verification
- Ability to interpret 3D CAD models and compare them effectively with physical build units
- Good understanding of engineering fundamentals, including materials, weld types, tolerances, and manufacturing processes
- Hands-on attitude with a willingness to work closely with shop technicians, assemblers, and shop engineers
- Effective communication skills with ability to clearly convey observations, deviations, and issues to the Senior Engineer and cross-functional teams
- Proactive and self-driven, capable of taking initiative in collecting data, photos, measurements, and build details without constant supervision
- Adaptability and openness to working in a fast-paced, build-focused environment with changing priorities
- Good organizational and documentation skills to maintain measurement logs, weld details, deviation reports, and shop observations
- Ability to build positive working relationships with shop personnel and act as a liaison between engineering and manufacturing
- Expertise in structural design ownership with affinity for calculation of material strength, bolted joint, welded joint etc
- Ability in navigating UG/Teamcenter
- Knowledge in Hands on FEA is an added advantage
- Strong Problem-solving skills with basic understanding of welding practices (e.g., weld size, type, throat measurement) preferred
