Miscellaneous Minimum Pay Rate:$163,592.00 Maximum Pay Rate:$216,736.00 Civil Service Status:Civil Service Apply by Date:04/14/2026 Posting Type:Open The Environmental Services Manager at SMUD will play a pivotal leadership role in overseeing and guiding environmental compliance and regulatory programs in alignment with SMUD's strong commitments to environmental stewardship and sustainability. SMUD is dedicated to meeting and exceeding federal, state, and local environmental regulations, proactively safeguarding air, water, land, and local habitats, and responsibly managing waste and hazardous materials. Through expert guidance, collaborative engagement with regulatory agencies, and continuous improvement initiatives, the Environmental Services Manager supports SMUD's mission to advance sustainable energy solutions while ensuring a safe, compliant workplace and making a positive impact for the community and environment. Purpose
To provide leadership and direction for the planning, development, and implementation of shared services programs such as the Environment Management (EM) Programs which to ensure legal and regulatory compliance with all applicable codes and regulations and provide proactive counsel and service to business unit clients. Assists in the development, implementation and managing of department goals, objectives, policies and priorities in partnership with the management team; selects, trains, motivates, evaluates and develops staff and ensures that strategic objectives and priorities are achieved and coordinated with other business units/departments. Required Experience Qualifications
Ten or more (10+) years of progressively responsible relevant work experience in development and implementation of a technical, comprehensive safety, occupational health and environmental/hazardous materials management program and related processes and/or risk management programs, including two or more years of progressively responsible supervisory experience or lead project experience in a teamwork environment. Methods and techniques for planning, organizing, directing and controlling work activities; policies and procedures for evaluating and recording performance results; policies and procedures for recruiting, screening and hiring; principles and practices for delegating, prioritizing, assigning and reviewing work assignments; policies and procedures related to supervisory practices and employee rights; methods and techniques for training staff; SMUD policies, procedures, applicable MOUs and other special agreements; principles and practices of process redesign and improvement; industry trends regarding EM; applicable legal requirements affecting the business unit; risks inherent to the business unit work process; the cost/benefits of a safe work environment and working safely; principles of Safety, Occupational Health and Environmental/Hazardous Materials Management programs/processes, policies procedures and standards; applicable federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations; principles and practices of Environmental sampling, ecological interactions, chemical and physical processes and effects of manual actions; practices and processes in conducting safety, loss control/prevention, occupational health and environmental audits, inspections and self-assessments; operation of an electric power utility; regulatory processes of the federal, state and local levels to effectively represent SMUD; principles and practices of program evaluation; procedures and practices for monitoring and managing projects; standard operating procedures for modern office equipment including a computer and applicable software; English grammar, punctuation and vocabulary standards. Interpret and apply SMUD policies procedures, applicable MOU and/or other special agreements; apply applicable personnel laws, codes and regulations; coach, mentor, motivate, influence, challenge and develop staff; manage contracts and work of consultants and contractors; recruit, select, hire, supervise and evaluate employees; prepare performance plans and evaluations for staff; coordinate the work of the function or unit with other SMUD areas; establish, manage, monitor and update budget; identify, assess and coordinate training needs for staff; initiate, maintain and oversee adherence to safety policies and procedures; interact with others to influence and motivate; compile and prepare technical, statistical and/or analytical reports and presentations; develop and conduct oral presentations to internal/external audiences; respond to and resolve customer issues, concerns and needs; monitor and manage projects; demonstrate leadership by surfacing important issues even when unpopular; research, analyze and provide recommendations to achieve department and SMUD objectives; utilize a personal computer and/or computer terminal, systems and software relevant to the job; communicate effectively orally and in writing internally/externally; establish and maintain effective working relationships internally/externally.
