Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. The position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

About the Position

The Materials Testing Technician Senior performs comprehensive quality assurance testing on transportation project materials, specializing in soils, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete. The position works primarily in a laboratory setting, with responsibility for supporting and conducting field operations as needed. This role performs and oversees materials testing, inspections, research, and investigations of construction materials, applying industry-standard methodologies for roadway and bridge construction and maintenance, while ensuring full compliance with applicable standards, specifications, and provisions.

As a key member of the team, this position directly supports the safety, quality, and reliability of public infrastructure, making a meaningful and lasting impact on the community we serve. The Materials Testing Technician Senior serves as primary support to the laboratory supervisor by coordinating and delegating daily work activities and assisting in the training, mentoring, and development of lab technicians to ensure high-quality, efficient, and consistent operations.

We Require

  • Two years of experience in field survey, computer-aided drafting, engineering design, land surveying, or related engineering technician duties

  • Associate's degree or two years of college coursework in engineering, engineering technology, technical computer-assisted drafting, land surveying, or another related field relevant to the area of assignment

  • Must possess certifications for ATTI Soil and Aggregate, ATTI Asphalt, and ACI Strength

  • A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis

Other Requirements

  • Successful candidates must currently possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire

  • Must obtain ACI Field Certification and Nuclear Gauge and Radiation Safety certification within six months of hire

  • Additional experience in materials testing for transportation or infrastructure projects

  • Working knowledge of AASHTO and ASTM standards and testing procedures

  • Experience with laboratory equipment calibration, maintenance, and quality control practices

  • Experience working in both laboratory and field environments under varying conditions

Job Contributions

  • Perform laboratory testing of all construction materials utilized in the construction of assigned projects

  • Conduct field sampling and testing to verify the adequacy of construction materials and methods

  • Participate in proficiency sample testing and support on-site certification inspections conducted by national certifying agencies to ensure compliance with applicable standards

  • Complete, analyze, and report results for assigned research/investigation and special testing projects in accordance with established procedures and supervisory direction

  • Prepare, review, and submit testing reports and summaries for accuracy and compliance

  • Perform and oversee maintenance, calibration, and verification of laboratory testing equipment

  • Assist in training, mentoring, and guiding laboratory technicians to ensure quality and consistency in testing procedures

  • Coordinate and assign daily work activities to support laboratory operations, acting on behalf of the laboratory supervisor as needed

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Working Conditions

  • This position requires the employee to be in the office/field or customer-facing for all hours worked

  • Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 - 20 pounds constantly

  • The work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties and responsibilities, the employee may be exposed to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations. Position is subject to atmospheric conditions: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation

Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software, and Hardware

Light truck, coring rig, and laboratory testing equipment for soils, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete; heating and burn-off ovens; and standard hand tools such as pliers, screwdrivers, cutting tools, and diamond saws. Software includes Microsoft Office, Workday, temperature logging applications, Asphalt Institute R18 LabQMS, and computer software used to operate and control testing equipment. Hardware includes computers and monitors.

Protective Equipment Required

All MCDOT employees are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if visiting or working in the field. PPE will be issued by MCDOT once employed.
