| Brief Summary of Work for this Position |
Advise NC is a statewide organization that assists underserved high schools by providing highly trained, full-time Next Step Advisers who provide post-secondary planning support to students and families. Advise NC takes a whole-school approach, educating students from all grades and backgrounds on post-secondary options available to them, including college enrollment, employment, and military enlistment. Advise NC at
UNCW is one of five founding Advise NC programs in the state. Our
programs work together to strengthen our shared mission of empowering students and communities across North Carolina, ensuring that all of our students served receive the support they deserve.
Next Step Advisers provide individualized support to help students explore their post-graduation options. Advise NC at
UNCW will serve 10 high schools across Beaufort, Columbus, Craven, Cumberland, Jones, New Hanover, and Pender Counties for the 2026-2027 academic year.
Next Step Advisers:
- Provide one-on-one admissions and financial aid advising to any student or family seeking assistance
- Encourage students to consider a broad range of appropriate post-secondary choices and assist them in developing a comprehensive list of individualized options
- Help students and families complete and submit admissions, financial aid, and scholarship applications
- Organize and facilitate events that encourage students and their families to consider, plan for, and apply to post-secondary opportunities
- Establish productive and strategic relationships with principals, counselors, and teachers within the partner school
- Enhance visibility of the role through school and community outreach, partnering with local organizations and school and district staff.
- Document and analyze student interactions to assist in the assessment and long-term sustainability of the program
- Maintain expertise in admissions and financial aid advising
Additional Details
AmeriCorps Next Step Advisers:
- Report to UNCW-based program staff, as well as a high school-based onsite supervisors
- Participate in paid pre-service training during the summer
- Participate in ongoing personal professional development and training throughout the program year
- Commit to one academic year (11 months) of service with a preferred two-year commitment if mutually agreed upon by the program staff and the Next Step Adviser.
- Relocate to the service area and be involved in the surrounding community
