Job Family Description

Personnel in Fire Protection and Emergency Response supervise or perform work to control and extinguish fires, rescue persons endangered by fire, and reduce or eliminate potential fire hazards. It also covers fire service positions that control hazardous materials incidents; train personnel in fire protection and prevention; operate fire communications equipment; develop and implement fire protection and prevention plans, procedures, and standards; and advise on improvements to structures for better fire prevention. Positions in this series require knowledge of firefighting and fire prevention theory and techniques, a knowledge of fixed and mobile firefighting equipment operation; and/or the ability to plan, direct, or carry out fire protection and prevention programs and operations.

Discipline Description

Fire and Emergency Response personnel roles involve preventing, preparing for, and responding to fires, emergency medical responses, hazardous materials incidents, technical rescues, and other emergencies, ensuring the safety of people, property, and the environment. The role involves implementing preventative measures, fire protection coordination, and leading emergency response teams in effecting mitigation, investigation, and recovery efforts.

Some Typical Duties & Responsibilities Include:

The Savannah River Site Fire Department is seeking an experienced and dedicated Fire Officer / Deputy Chief. The Deputy Fire Chief is a senior leadership position responsible for assisting the Fire Chief in planning, organizing, and directing the operations and administration of the Fire Department. This position plays a critical role in developing strategies, managing resources, and ensuring effective delivery of fire prevention, fire suppression, emergency medical services (EMS), disaster response, training, and public safety programs. The Deputy Fire Chief acts as the Fire Chief in their absence and supports overall departmental leadership to meet community safety goals.

Key Responsibilities:
* Assist the Fire Chief in directing and managing all fire department operations, including emergency response, personnel management, training, prevention, and safety initiatives.
* Provide direct supervision to shift managers, division managers, or other senior staff.
* Develop, implement, and enforce departmental policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and safety regulations.
* Coordinate mutual aid agreements and collaboration with local, regional, state, and federal agencies.
* Oversee budget planning, procurement, and financial management within assigned divisions.
* Ensure compliance with applicable laws, codes, and standards, including OSHA, NFPA, and state/local regulations.
* Conduct performance evaluations, manage employee discipline, and promote a positive work culture.
* Support fire prevention and community risk reduction efforts through outreach and public education.
* Serve as a liaison with external stakeholders such as site executive management, senior leadership, and facility managers
* Respond to major incidents and assist/assume command as needed. Function as part of the command team and support the ERO.

Required Qualifications

* Twelve or more YOE as an individual contributor in one or more of the roles managed plus three or more years of experience (YOE) in a relevant management role, OR Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field plus eight or more years of experience (YOE) in one or more of the roles managed, OR Master's Degree in a relevant field plus five or more years of experience (YOE) in one or more of the roles managed
* Equivalencies to experience and education requirements will be considered
* Training and IFSAC/NPQ certification in accordance with NFPA 1001: Standards for Fire Fighter Level II, or equivalent
* Certification as a South Carolina Emergency Medical Technician and/or National Registry
* Certification equivalent to NFPA 472: Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents Technician Level or Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 1910.120: Hazardous Waste Technician and Emergency Response
* Training and IFSAC/NPQ certification in accordance with NFPA 1021: Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications, Fire Officer Level III, or equivalent IFSAC
* Training and IFSAC/NPQ certification in accordance with NFPA 1041 Standard for Fire and Emergency Services Instructor Professional Qualifications, Fire Instructor Level II
* Must maintain certification by training the minimum number of hours as prescribed by the SRS Fire Department Training Program.
* Must maintain EMT Certification prescribed by the SRS Fire Department Emergency Medical Service Continuing Education Program.
* Maintains AHJ-determined physical fitness standards suitable for the environment and typing; meets or exceeds the physical fitness standard in NFPA 1582 Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments and satisfy all essential firefighting functions as identified in Section 5.1.1
* Maintains immunizations in accordance with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recommended adult immunization schedule.
* Able to work while wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Security Clearance Information

SRNS is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug & alcohol test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, criminal records, and employment history, and education verifications. Positions with SRNS may require applicants to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
