JOB ANNOUNCEMENT COORDINATING ENGINEER I Bureau of ARCHITECHTURE AND CONSTRUCTION Chicago Department of Fleet & Facility Management Number of Positions:1 (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval) Starting Salary: $115,992.00 ANNUALLY (GY-12) Applications for this position will be accepted until 11:59pm CDT on 04/09/2026 Job Overview Under direction, the class coordinates and supervises the work of an engineering section responsible for the planning, design and monitoring of construction on infrastructure and building projects, or functions as a project manager for a major engineering project of considerable scope and complexity; and performs related duties as required. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Directs the conduct of field surveys to identify conditions that may impact the scope of proposed construction, repair and maintenance projects; meets with engineers and consultants to determine scope, costs, design criteria and specifications for projects such as facilities, mechanical equipment and systems, and related systems and structures; supervises engineering series staff and oversees engineering consultants and vendors functioning as a design and record engineers ensuring work is completed according to contract specifications, budget and project time lines; interprets design plans and specifications to contractors and assists in resolving design and construction problems; directs preparation of project status and cost reports to management and funding agencies; monitors projects assigned to staff and consultant engineers ensuring projects comply with engineering specifications, are completed on schedule and are within budget; directs the approval of partial and final payments to contractors; assigns, supervises and reviews the work of lower level engineers engaged in calibrating equipment and conducting tests to assess the operational efficiency of mechanical systems and equipment; authorizes , prepares and supervises the preparation of design plans, contract documents, cost estimates and engineering calculations for construction or rehabilitation projects; assist supervisory staff in resolving complex engineering design and construction problems; review and approve plan changes and contract modifications submitted by engineering staff; assigns various projects and performs training for subordinate staff and reviews and evaluates their performance; assists with preparation of grant applications for varies energy efficiency features and programs within the Department; researches new methods and techniques for use in installing, maintaining and repairing mechanical systems and equipment, as required; represents City at community meetings and to businesses affected by development projects. Performs other related duties as required. Additional duties may be required for this position Location: North LaSalle Street, Suite 200 Hours: M-F 9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. (Must be flexible to early and/or late meetings) THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM CAREER SERVICE Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, plus five (5) years of work experience in the planning, design, and construction management of engineering projects, of which three (3) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position, OR Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree or higher in Engineering, plus four (4) years of work experience in the planning, design, and construction management of engineering projects, of which three (3) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position. Depending upon department assignment, field of engineering may vary. Registration as a Professional Engineer (R.P.E.) is required. At the time of employment, positions must have obtained Registration as a Professional Engineer (R.P.E.) in the State of Illinois. A valid State of Illinois driver's license required at the time of hire. SELECTION REQUIREMENTS This position requires applicants to complete an interview.
