About the Position The Tree Crew Worker performs tree maintenance activities including pruning, planting, and removal of trees in City rights-of-way, parks and natural areas. The position maintains the tree inventory database, creates and closes work orders as needed and performs and schedules maintenance of equipment. Responsible for upholding the most up to date standards for tree work and crew safety.

Essential Duties
-
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Conduct maintenance of public trees including planting, pruning, treatment, removal and replacement. Perform tree establishment maintenance including watering of newly planted trees. Assist in inspections related to tree health. Serve as part of a team that implements and coordinates neighborhood tree planting and reforestation projects for parks, street rights-of-way and other public areas.
- Assist in evaluation of problematic trees and tree roots that have impacted sidewalks and roadways. Monitor and inspect City tree protections and new City tree plantings specified for developments. Monitor and inspect the work of maintenance contractors and recommend decisions on procedures and methods. Monitor tree concerns with utility companies, contractors and private citizens. Assist with investigating public complaints and provide information on municipal code or policy for educational purposes.
- Lead tree maintenance and planting activities of casual staff and volunteers and uphold the most up to date standards for tree work and crew safety. Participate in safety, association and industry training.
- Operate a variety of equipment including hand tools, power tools and large equipment. Perform and schedule maintenance of equipment. Conduct and document inspections, repairs, and condition of equipment. Assist in determining equipment costs and material specifications. Purchase needed supplies and equipment.
- Maintain tree inventory database and create, maintain, and close work orders.
- Serve as liaison with the public daily. Represent the Department at civic engagement events and advisory committees.
- Assist in application of pesticides for landscape maintenance, tree care, and invasive species control in accordance with Integrated Pest Management best practices.
- Assist with implementation of department wide events, camp cleanups, and activities as assigned. Respond to after-hours emergency calls and make necessary repairs.
- Operate and drive a motor vehicle and/or equipment safely and legally.

Qualifications and Skills

Qualifying Education / Experience
- Two years' related work experience, training, and/or education including at least one year of arboriculture, park or landscape maintenance experience.
Desired Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Certifications / Licenses
- Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification.
- Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Oregon Driver's License. Oregon Class B Commercial driver's license may be required for some assignments.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge of: or ability to learn safe operation, repair, fabrication, and modification for a large variety of equipment, including chainsaws, chippers and other arboriculture equipment.
Skill in: oral and written communication.
Ability to: understand and follow simple oral and written instruction and to exchange routine information; understand simple work processes, methods and/or equipment; interact and provide assistance to a variety of audiences; facilitate, assist, monitor, and implement daily assignments of casual employees and volunteers; get along well and maintain effective work relationships with coworkers, the public, other agencies, neighborhood groups, committees, and volunteers; work in a team-oriented environment, but also work alone at a worksite, under supervisory direction while performing duties thoroughly and accurately, in accordance with Department policy; use a computer to perform the essential duties of the position; learn the use of and interpretation of GPS & GIS mapping equipment /systems; work a regular workweek with attendance at after-hours meetings, special events, projects or for emergency response; respond to after-hour and weekend calls or emergencies; operate a pickup truck, tractor, trailer, forklift; lift truck; aerial lift, excavator, skid steer, backpack blower, power tools, backpack sprayer, cell phone along with various other tools and implements as required to perform the essential duties.
