Senior Research Assistant - Allen Discovery Center

Tufts University
United States, Massachusetts, Medford
200 Boston Avenue (Show on map)
Mar 26, 2026
Overview

The Allen Discovery Center is dedicated to the advancement of basic biology and biomedicine, and to using an integrated approach to control biological structure and function. Through a combination of molecular genetics, biophysics, and computational approaches, researchers at the Center work toward multi-level control of patterning. Novel technology is being developed to modulate the bioelectric communication that enables cells to coordinate their activities toward specific anatomical and functional outcomes. Applications in progress include the repair of birth defects, regenerative medicine, cancer reprogramming, and synthetic biology.

What You'll Do

The Senior Research Assistant supports advanced research activities within the Levin Lab and is responsible for independently performing specialized and complex laboratory techniques in support of funded research initiatives. This position contributes to a defined research project primarily involving frog embryo microinjection, directed energy (DE) exposure, embryo culturing, primary neural crest cell harvesting and culture, imaging, and data extraction. The position also includes advanced experimental work in embryo fixation and sectioning, spatial transcriptomic imaging, and image processing.

Working under the general direction of the Principal Investigator, the Senior Research Assistant collaborates in the development, modification, and optimization of research techniques and protocols and provides input into experimental design. The role requires a high degree of technical expertise and independent judgment in planning and executing experiments.
The Senior Research Assistant analyzes and interprets data, maintains accurate research records, and assists in preparing materials for publications, presentations, and reports. This position may provide functional guidance, training, and oversight to junior laboratory staff and students and assists with day-to-day laboratory operations, including equipment maintenance, inventory control, and adherence to safety and compliance requirements. This role operates with limited supervision, applies established and emerging methodologies, and contributes to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of laboratory operations and research outcomes.
  • Conducts specialized laboratory experiments
  • Develops research study design, techniques and protocols in collaboration with Principal Investigator
  • Reviews results and suggests modifications to experiments and protocols where necessary
  • Oversees collection and data entry of results
  • Analyzes and interprets data and drafts results of experiments
  • Writes summaries and material for presentation and publication
