The School of Chemistry & Biochemistry of The Georgia Institute of Technology

The school has vibrant undergraduate and graduate programs, with over 400 undergraduate majors and 170 graduate students, and an extensive research portfolio. Its faculty, staff, and students participate in a range of dynamic and collaborative research programs and enjoy modern facilities located on a pleasant urban campus in the City of Atlanta, Georgia.

Job Summary

Provide support services in the operation and maintenance of an academic or research laboratory to include performing analyses; setup, operation, maintenance and cleaning of equipment; and maintaining stock of supplies. Specific duties will be determined based on assignment and unit needs. Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Setup, operate and maintain instruments and other equipment used in performing lab tests and experiments.

Job Duty 2 -
Order supplies and materials as required; maintain records.

Job Duty 3 -
Setup laboratory media/equipment for demonstrations.

Job Duty 4 -
May clean instruments, glassware and other lab equipment.

Job Duty 5 -
Prepare and process laboratory samples for use in assigned tests.

Job Duty 6 -
Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
High school diploma, GED Certificate or Vocational School Diploma

Required Experience
Up to two years of job related experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred Education: B.S. degree in life sciences, chemistry, biological physics, or related field.
  • Preferred Work Experience: research laboratory experience (e.g. undergraduate research)
  • Preferred Skills: organization, time management, Microsoft office, written communication, oral communication

Additional tasks may include:

  • Molecular biology: PCR, cloning, DNA analysis, strain stocks
  • Expression of proteins in E. coli
  • Tissue culture of mammalian cells
  • Purification of proteins
  • Gel electrophoresis
  • Biochemical assays
  • Protein crystallization
  • Other solution biophysical methods (spectroscopy)
  • Use lab computers and software to record data, perform data analysis, and complete results for presentation and review
  • Ordering lab supplies and ensuring delivery
  • Coordinating instrument repair
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

SKILLS
This job requires working knowledge in the use of instrumentation and other lab equipment, laboratory processes and procedures specific to assigned lab. Skills in inventory management and the use of specialized computer applications is required.

Other Information

The Lieberman lab in the School of Chemistry & Biochemistry has an opening for a Temporary Technician.

Our research projects focus on molecular aspects of protein misfolding in glaucoma. Our interdisciplinary lab combines biochemical, biophysical, and cell biology methods with structural biology approaches. We seek to better understand what differentiates diseased proteins from their wild-type counterparts, and use this information to develop new diagnostics and therapies. Candidates must have a B.S. or B.A. degree in life sciences, chemistry, biological physics, or a related field. A positive attitude, an organized work style, and willingness to learn new methods at the bench is required. Practical expertise in any one or more of the following areas is also desirable: molecular biology, protein expression and purification; protein biochemistry (e.g. enzyme, binding assays, membrane proteins), biophysics (e.g. spectroscopy, kinetics of aggregation, AFM imaging); cell biology (e.g. mammalian cell culture, Western blotting); structural biology (e.g. crystallography, SAXS, SEC-MALS, NMR)

This is an hourly position. Salary is $18.03/hr.
