POSITION SPECIFICS

The Penn State College of Medicine (PSCOM) seeks a nationally recognized, accomplished, and visionary leader to continue to advance the research, education, and philanthropic missions of the Department of Molecular and Precision Medicine. This new Chair will build on the significant departmental and institutional strengths, commitment to research innovation, and superb education. The Department of Molecular and Precision Medicine has 15 tenure/tenure line faculty and 15 full-time fixed term/research faculty. The new Chair of Molecular and Precision Medicine must be a compelling, innovative leader and talented researcher whose passion for the educational and research missions energizes the faculty, staff, and learners, focusing their efforts on a strategic vision of excellence. The Chair will exhibit leadership skills that foster collaboration, planning, communication, and benchmarking of results in their approach to problem-solving and program building. Mentoring of early career faculty, recruitment, and career development of new faculty members are important components of the position. The Chair must also be a competent and prudent steward of the Department, guiding it through what will almost certainly be uncharted territories of change in the healthcare and social environments.

The Chair will be a model of adaptability and possess skills for conflict resolution and management of adversity. Within the Department, the Chair will promote a culture of institutional stewardship, excellence and transparency, including a commitment to improved business operations, efficient and effective use of resources, and a willingness to re-align resources with evolving strategies. PSCOM prioritizes diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice as core values essential to achieving excellence in their clinical, education, and research missions. As such, the Chair will value individuals with multidimensional diverse identities, experiences, and perspectives that contribute to the cognitive diversity and energetic culture that enriches our organization.

The Department Chair will emphasize building, leading, growing, and connecting the research and clinical enterprises, ultimately fostering an environment that promotes academic productivity, and national prominence, improving outcomes, and bringing national distinction to the enterprise. The Chair will recognize the value of contributions from and the needs of faculty members across the Department and will recognize the importance of creating an environment where diverse points of view are solicited and encouraged. The PSCOM is deeply committed to ensuring that the Department of Molecular and Precision Medicine is recognized among the best in the nation and has set the table for its next Chair to successfully lead the Department in that direction.

Responsibilities:

  • The Chair will be responsible for the Department's continued progression and success in its academic, research and educational missions.

  • The Chair will be responsible for the financial and operational performance of the Department.

  • The Chair will foster collaborations among basic science, Public Health Sciences, and clinical Departments, the University, and other clinical affiliates.

  • The Chair will provide strategic vision and operational leadership for the academic, research, and educational programs, creating an environment and sense of community that supports the Department's faculty, staff, and students, leading to the recruitment, retention, development and support of outstanding faculty and staff.

All applicants for academic positions will be submitted through Penn State's Workday recruitment module, where applicants will be asked to respond affirmatively to a question that indicates that they understand the text below:

The following paragraph applies to you in the event you are a finalist for a tenure-line position and are seeking tenure immediately upon appointment.Prior to your final on-campus (in-person or virtual) interview, it is your responsibility to submit a signed authorization and disclosure form to the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs to disclose any pending investigations of your conduct (i.e., research/sexual misconduct/other) or investigations of your conduct that resulted in a finding of misconduct. Because not all pending investigations or findings of misconduct as a result of an investigation preclude extending an offer of employment, Penn State will contact your current/prior institution to determine whether the investigation raises concerns about your suitability for the position. If the University becomes aware of any past finding of misconduct or pending investigations that were not disclosed, this will be treated as a serious omission and the University reserves the right to rescind your offer or terminate employment. The authorization and disclosure form is on the website of the Office of the Vice Provost for Affairs (see https://vpfa.psu.edu/disclosure-of-misconduct/). By typing your name below, you acknowledge that you have read and agree to the statement above.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.
