THE POSITION

The Department of General Services (DGS) is on the lookout for a Capital Programs Intern interested in working closely with senior leadership to gain insight on the scope and complexity of our work. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Our internship program is intended to provide you with a broad understanding of government operations at the state level. This internship provides weekly opportunities where you will engage with senior leadership across DGS, learning the duties and intricacies of our work. The summer schedule events also include tours of the capitol facilities, Governor's Residence, and a visit to Commonwealth Media Services (CMS) studios. You will be participating in a training session conducted by our leg affairs director to increase your understanding of the complexity of executive and legislative bodies collaboration to improve the lives of Pennsylvanians. As a Capital Programs Intern, you will have the opportunity to develop skills that align with your future. Work involves:

  • Assisting the Regional Manager with monitoring the schedule and cost performance of an active construction project
  • Tracking and documenting the progress of established construction processes, identifying potential deviations and discrepancies
  • Preparing and compiling regular status reports summarizing project progress, challenges, and milestones achieved
  • Attending job conference meetings, documenting discussions, action items, and decisions made
  • Reviewing construction plans and specifications to ensure compliance with project requirements and standards
  • Compiling data and information for ad hoc reports, analyzing trends, and providing insights to the Regional Manager
  • Assisting in the development of recommendations based on analyzed project data and observations
  • Supporting the Regional Manager with the coordination of communication between contractors, architects, and other stakeholders
  • Observing and learning how construction managers identify and address potential problems encountered on a project site
  • Assisting in the documentation of project changes, requests for information, and submittals
  • Participating in site inspections and documenting observations related to construction progress and quality
  • Organizing and maintaining project documentation, including meeting minutes, reports, and correspondence
  • Assisting in the preparation of project closeout documentation
  • Supporting the regional manager in the monitoring of safety protocols on the job site
Please be advised this position reports to the job site trailer at an active construction project. You must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including a hard hat and safety toe shoes.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Internship, approximately June 2026 through August 2026
  • Schedule to be determined later with the selected candidate and the bureau.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework). You will be required to report on site every day. Occasional telework may be approved by the supervisor. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university program, pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering Management, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architecture, or Structural Design and Construction Engineering Technology.
  • Must be in good academic standing (as defined by a GPA of 2.0 or higher).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must have a valid driver's license.
  • You must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including a hard hat and safety toe shoes.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
