Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (
UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC's 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education.
UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers.
In FY2016,
UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition,
UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year. |

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Per diem Staff RN in the Addictions Program within Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.
The Staff Nurse provides nursing services and participates in the delivery of individualized, goal directed nursing care through the use of the nursing process in accordance with departmental and program policies and procedures and all regulatory requirements. The Staff Nurse functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team; participates in quality improvement activities, educational activities and supports research endeavors. The role is consistent with the scope and standards outlined by the American Psychiatric Nurses Association for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Assesses and diagnoses individual served, family and significant other needs in order to provide quality care to assigned individual served.
- Collaborates with treatment team, individuals served, family and significant other in the development of individualized treatment/recovery plan of care, as clinically indicated and in compliance with all regulatory timelines.
- Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to implement the plan of care, nursing interventions and procedures as necessary for the care and safety of the individual served.
- Evaluates progress toward attainment of expected outcomes on an as needed basis in order to meet the individual served and family/significant other needs to ensure overall quality of care delivered.
- Utilizes evidence-based interventions and treatment specific to the diagnosis or problem.
- Maintains concurrent and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to ensure the integration of information for use by the multidisciplinary team, in order to ensure quality care.
- Conducts phlebotomy and urine specimen collection.

- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New Jersey.

- The ability to provide psychiatric nursing, ability to relate to clients, ability to use the nursing process, effective communication skills, ability to problem solve, ability to direct non-professional staff and the ability to request help as needed.
- Demonstrate strong clinical nursing specialty, excellent communication skills, must be PC literate with proficiency in word processing.

- Ability to speak clearly and write proficiently.
- The ability to focus on the task at hand despite numerous interruptions.
- Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and document into an electronic medical record while in the field.
- The employee spends much time driving, walking, standing, bending, and talking with individuals served in the community located throughout the region.
- Use of own vehicle for community outreach.
- Transport of individuals served in state vehicles.
- The employee can expect to lift up to 20 pounds.
- The work environment is predominantly in the community in individuals' homes, shelters, soup kitchens and places where individuals congregate (i.e. forests, train stations, under bridges etc.).
- Individual wellness checks and crisis intervention required.
- Subject to unpredictable situations, crises, to include behavioral, medical, substance use and psychiatric.
- Occasionally exposed to individuals exhibiting assaultive behaviors.
- Exposure to blood borne pathogens that requires use of personal protective equipment.
