Effectively train, develop, and coach new auditors. Motivate and develop others in a manner that maximizes productivity and morale. Supervise and evaluate staff auditors. Provide technical guidance and ensure work quality.

Job Overview:

The Internal Auditor 4 leads and/or executes highly complex audits, advisory engagements, and investigations across the Department of Education, related agencies, institutions, and local school districts. This role focuses on operational effectiveness, internal controls, technology-driven risk, and regulatory compliance. The position also supports fraud, waste, and abuse investigations and may act as Assistant Internal Audit Director when needed. Minimal travel may be required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and perform high-complexity audits, including first-time and emerging risk engagements.
  • Conduct investigations of fraud, waste, or abuse, including interviews and other test work.
  • Ensure conformance with GIAS, GAGAS Yellow Book, and Green Book professional standards.
  • Provide advisory services to improve processes and controls.
  • Use Excel and other data analytics tools to identify anomalies, trends, and risk patterns.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports and present findings to leadership.
  • Effectively evaluate and comprehend organizational structure, practices, policies, procedures, and regulations for planning and executing projects.
  • Develop tailored work programs and effective substantive testing methods.
  • Establish and monitor progress against milestones / deadlines to ensure forward momentum of projects.
  • Analyze internal controls for adequacy; make recommendations for remediation.
  • Recommend control enhancements and remediation efforts.
  • Evaluate IT systems, cybersecurity controls, data governance, and AI-related risks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree required; Accounting, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or similar analytical degree strongly preferred.

Minimum five years of progressively responsible internal auditing experience, including supervisory experience.

Deep understanding of internal audit principles and practices, with the ability to design and tailor work programs and procedures for uniquely difficult new or emerging risk areas.

Preferred Certifications: CFE, CIA, CISA, CPA, or an AI/ML certification.

Strong experience with data analytics and audit technology.
