About our group:

Seagate is looking for a Staff Engineer who will report to the Wafer Process Engineering organization at Seagate's Recording Head Operations located in Bloomington, MN.



The Wafer MPI team is responsible for scaling new wafer processes and products from the late development space into full volume build. This is in support of Seagate's HAMR recording technology. HAMR is enabled by an integrated laser that is used to energize a plasmonic near-field transducer.



Our team manages wafer builds and engineering optimizations involving lasers and laser light paths, plasmonic transducers, electronic and magnetic elements, materials selections, and thermal management. We work in partnership with Wafer Operations, Wafer Process Development, Wafer Design, and Product Engineering.

About the role - you will:

  • Engage during the development of new reader and writer technologies, including Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR).
  • Integrate those technologies into the factory and bring to volume production readiness.
  • May specialize in a specific discipline (lithography, vacuum, plate, CMP, metrology, configuration/product support) within the new process launch space.
  • Interact with levels of personnel from Directors to Technicians and Operators.
  • Communicate well to foster strong relationships and common understanding.
  • Develop and deliver tactical direction on critical issues.
  • Prepare and present documented results to a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrate good judgment related to technical and business impacts of process change recommendations.
  • Design experiments in a way that generates meaningful and accurate results.
  • Actively contribute to daily troubleshooting of material, manufacturing process and product design issues.
  • Develop skills in Machine Learning, Generative AI, and Data Science.
  • Support and Develop Automation with Training using Microsoft Power Automate, Python, and OCAPs.

Your experience includes:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field such as Physics Chemistry, Material Science, etc. and 8+ years of experience, or Master's degree in Engineering or related field such as Physics Chemistry, Material Science, etc.and 6+ years of experience, or PhD and 3+ years of experience or equivalent education and experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills so as to convey complex and technical subject matter to a variety of audiences.
  • Capability to work in a clean room environment and sometimes be on-call to support off-shift issues.
  • Demonstrable ability to apply design of experiments and statistical process control techniques.
  • Ability to travel to international manufacturing sites on an occasional basis.



You Might Also Have:




  • Multiple years of semi-conductor/wafer fabrication and or data storage product development.
  • Materials Science background.
  • Experience with AI and ML application is a plus.



The estimated base salary range for this position is $105,664.00 - $154,005.28. The individual salary is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
