Job Description:

As an Internal Communications Consultant, you'll partner closely with Executives and crossfunctional Teams to craft and execute strategic communication plans that translate complex business strategy into clear, actionable messaging for Employees. You'll navigate competing priorities, influence outcomes across the organization, and help shape communication strategies for major initiatives. By determining messaging goals, advising on tone and channels, and driving alignment during change and transformation, you'll help ensure Employees understand not just what is changing, but why it matters. Through thoughtful storytelling, twoway dialogue, and a deep commitment to Southwest's culture and values, you'll strengthen engagement, reinforce key behaviors, and help turn strategy into action-making Internal Communications a true competitive advantage for Southwest Airlines.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as communications program lead and strategic communications counsel to colleagues, internal clients' Leaders, and Executives-determining appropriate tone, message, and channel to deliver clear and effective messages that align with Company and client objectives
  • Partner with departments to create communication strategies to create deeper engagement with multiple stakeholders
  • Demonstrate autonomy in the development of message and channel strategy, gathering inputs from multiple sources, obtaining and coordinating the proper approvals, and partnering with other departments or outside partners as needed to build and execute communication strategy
  • In partnership with Customer Experience & Analytics and other Communications Teams to define and measure key performance metrics, analyze data, and develop recommendations based on findings
  • Work closely with Senior Leaders across the Company to advise on communication tactics, ghostwriting, and offering constructive communication advice
  • Work in a collaborative spirit through relationship-building with internal stakeholders to ensure alignment and prioritization of their department goals and communication efforts
  • Stay current with advancements and trends in communication, specifically in the areas of mobile messaging, social and collaborative sites, and digital presence
  • Support and advise the communications strategy for internal clients during crises
  • May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of writing, communication strategy, tactics, and tools and an understanding of how to effectively execute on them including creative ways to inform and connect via written, oral, and visual media
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar including Microsoft Office or other word processing tools
  • Skilled in oral and written communication, including production of Executive-level presentations and communication materials which illustrate how communication contributes to business objectives
  • Skilled in giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and applying relevant information to communication strategy and messaging
  • Ability to demonstrate comfort and confidence with public speaking and presenting in front of senior level Leaders
  • Ability to listen, understand, and communicate ideas presented in writing and/or in speaking with others
  • Ability to influence without positional authority
  • Ability to demonstrate a strategic thought process, proactive initiative, and a sense of urgency
  • Ability to take ownership and accountability
Education
  • Required: High School Diploma or GED

Experience

  • Required: Advanced-level experience, seasoned and specialized knowledge in:

    • Leading large-scale, complex communication efforts, either from within a business organization or with a strong partnership with the business

    • Creating communication plans

    • Managing cross-functional projects

  • Preferred: Managing communication during a crisis

  • Ability to perform work duties from limited space workstation/desk/office area for extended periods of time
  • Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job
  • Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job
Other Qualifications
  • Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines
  • Must be able to travel periodically as needed
  • Must be willing to work outside of 8-5 hours as needed depending on the needs of the business
  • Must meet confidentiality expectations pertaining to confidential, proprietary, and sensitive Company information

Pay & Benefits

  • Competitive market salary from$103,750per year to$115,300 per year* depending on qualifications and experience. For eligible Leadership and individual contributor roles, additional bonus opportunities are available and awarded at the discretion of the company.
