SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the licensed Physical Therapist and the Clinical Manager of the department, the assistant is licensed by the Department of Health to assist in the practice of physical therapy. In accordance with the plan of care established by the physical therapist, provides treatment to improve the functional status of their patient by achieving or restoring strength, endurance and mobility. Physical therapist assistants provides treatment to patients of all ages, as defined by the scope of practice of the department in which they work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Principal Duties
Independently executes patient treatment program to achieve goals established by the patient and their physical therapist within the established plan of care
Demonstrates safe mobilization of patients using proper body mechanics and/ or lift, transfer equipment to ensure personal and patient safety
Demonstrates competence in use of therapeutic interventions specific to patient population
Monitors patient response to therapeutic intervention and adjusts treatment as appropriate
Consults with physical therapist to progress patients to desired outcomes
Provides feedback to physical therapist regarding patient goals and treatment plan
Provides feedback to physical therapist regarding discharge recommendations/ appropriateness
Consults with physical therapist regarding patient needs/ referrals/ consults
Notifies physical therapist of need for patient reassessment or reevaluation.
Educates and trains patient/ caregivers in performance of exercise, and equipmentssistive device use, within the plan of care.
Completes documentation and charges accurately and timely, in compliance with department policy
Seeks additional guidance when necessary to ensure safe and effective patient care
Works as a member of the interdisciplinary team to support departmental and patient needs
Participates in strategic departmental quality improvement initiatives

Exhibits effective and professional verbal and non-verbal communication
Communicates clearly, respectfully, and honestly with patients and/or caregivers, and colleagues
Adjusts communication and response to the level of understanding of the listener
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Associate degree from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant Program. State license for Physical Therapist Assistant issued by the Rhode Island Department of Health is required.
EXPERIENCE:
New graduates will be considered. Clinical experience in program specific settings preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Fit for duty in accordance with OSHA standards and program specific needs.
INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Performs independently within department policies, practices, and protocols of patient treatment
Refers specific complex problems to Physical Therapist/ ACM and/or Clinical Manager when clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
No direct supervision. However, pursuant to the state of Rhode Island Rules and Regulations for Licensing Physical Therapist Assistants, a licensed physical therapist assistant may be responsible for the supervision of supportive personnel and students to ensure the safety and welfare of patients.

Pay Range:

$26.80-$44.21
