Full-Time | Inpatient & Outpatient | Weekend & Holiday Required

The Department of Pediatrics seeks a full-time Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. This position provides comprehensive, evidence-based care to children, adolescents, and young adults with malignant and non-malignant hematologic disorders across inpatient and outpatient settings.

The APP will serve as an essential member of a multidisciplinary academic team and will play an active role in clinical care, education, quality improvement, and participation in clinical research and therapeutic trials.

This position will involve primarily weekend coverage with the possibility of outpatient clinic responsibilities for admissions and follow up visits.

Clinical Responsibilities

Inpatient Care

  • Conduct daily rounds in collaboration with attending physicians, fellows, residents, pharmacists, and nursing teams
  • Manage acute hematologic, oncologic and bone marrow transplant emergencies (e.g., febrile neutropenia, tumor lysis syndrome, sickle cell pain)
  • Perform admission evaluations, ongoing assessments, and discharge planning
  • Order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic studies
  • Participate in weekend and holiday coverage

Outpatient Care

  • Perform independent and collaborative visits under physician supervision, as appropriate
  • Manage outpatient oncology patients across the care continuum (active treatment, follow-up, survivorship)
  • Provide same-day urgent/symptom-based evaluations to reduce ED utilization
  • Manage chemotherapy and supportive care regimens
  • Monitor treatment response and manage therapy-related complications
  • Provide patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, and symptom management
  • Conduct chemotherapy education and supportive care counseling for patients and families
  • Coordinate care across specialties, infusion services, and external providers
  • Document and bill patient encounters in compliance with institutional and regulatory standards

Procedures (within scope of practice)

  • Lumbar punctures
  • Bone marrow aspirates and biopsies
  • Ommaya tap
  • Intrathecal chemotherapy administration
  • Central line management

Clinical Trials & Research Participation

  • Provide direct clinical care to patients enrolled in institutional, cooperative group, and industry-sponsored clinical trials
  • Ensure protocol adherence in collaboration with principal investigators and research coordinators
  • Perform study-related assessments and documentation
  • Assist with eligibility screening and informed consent processes (as permitted by scope and institutional policy)
  • Monitor for and report adverse events in accordance with regulatory standards
  • Participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards and research meetings
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and opportunities for scholarly activity, including presentations and publications

Academic Engagement

  • Participate in the education of residents, fellows, nurse practitioner students, and physician assistant students
  • Attend and contribute to divisional conferences, case reviews, and morbidity and mortality discussions
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and academic scholarship

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
  • Current state licensure and national board certification
  • DEA registration
  • Pediatric clinical experience required
  • BLS and PALS certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in pediatric hematology/oncology
  • Experience caring for patients enrolled in clinical trials
  • Familiarity with research protocols and regulatory requirements
  • Experience in academic medical center environment

Education Requirements:
* Completion of an accredited graduate-level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
* Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider (i.e., Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) in the state of North Carolina.
* Board certification if required by the Department. DEA.

* Documentation in the medical record to substantiate accurate billing.
