Job Description:

Worthington Armstrong Venture (WAVE) is currently hiring a Apprentice Machine Operator at our FONTANA, CA location. WAVE is a joint venture of Worthington and Armstrong World Industries, has established worldwide leadership in the production of suspended ceiling systems. WAVE produces metal ceiling grids that can be combined with Armstrong ceiling boards as a complete package or sold individually. Founded in 1992, WAVE operates under a long-standing corporate philosophy rooted in the Golden Rule. This philosophy serves as an unwavering commitment to the customer, supplier, and shareholder, and it serves as the foundation for one of the strongest employee-employer partnerships in American industry. This position is responsible for learning the trades under skilled and experienced machine operators. The material handling onto machine operations, focusing on slitter operation, throughout the facility; including both warehouse and production inventory areas. Preparing and processing materials on the slitter, press brake, sheer and hanger strap machines under supervision of an experienced operator. In addition, this position may be cross trained in other production forklift functions to serve as reserve.

Pay Rate: $19.07 - $23.84

General Responsibilities:



  • Slitter Support -

    • Decan coils.
    • Assist in the completion of daily slitter safety inspections (training provided); ensure that equipment is working properly and report any problems.
    • Assist in assembling/dissembling slitting tension and rewinder setups.
    • Prepare and clean out felts for slitting operation as necessary.
    • Inspect material during slitting process for quality.
    • Individually strap each mult.
    • Unload finished mults from slitting line, strap completed skids, weigh, and tag.
    • Safely transport finished goods to inventory warehouse and follow proper stacking procedures.
    • Verify accuracy of inbound/outbound paperwork against actual shipped materials and, where applicable, enter information into computer systems.

  • Always maintain all work areas and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Perform all work in a safe manner.
  • Perform these and other related duties as assigned or directed under supervision of an experienced personnel.
  • Actively participate in communication and WAVE culture.


In addition to the above general responsibilities, a machine operator must preserve a safe work environment and work in a safe manner following all safety SOPs.

Measures of Effectiveness; including, but not limited to:



  • Safety - OSHA rate, compliance to regulations/policies, evidence of risk reduction, engagement in 8-Step Safety Process, near-miss reporting.
  • Quality - Timely and accurate quality reporting, ability to recognize defects and implement corrective actions, storage of finished goods, cycle counting, delivery of outbound finished goods undamaged.
  • Productivity - Accuracy of system input, accuracy of finished goods inventory, delivery of on-time and undamaged materials, load, and unload productivity rates
  • Communication - Shift handoff and pick list preparation, conformance to loading procedures, teamwork, kaizen event participation.


Qualifications:



  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Preferred, knowledge and experience of machines in manufacturing environment, or similar experience.
  • Preferred; forklift certification or 2+ years' experience in forklift and machine operation.
  • Able to lift a maximum of 40 pounds.
  • Able to stand 8-10 hours per day at assigned work area.
  • Background check required.
