ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs repairs and services equipment including, but not limited to, trucks, graders, plows, tractors, dozers, excavators, as well as paving, seal-coating, and similar self-propelled equipment.
- Rebuilds and repairs equipment requiring cutting, welding, or fabricating steel items, including cleaning equipment in preparation for repairs.
- Diagnoses and repairs hydraulic systems, steering and suspension systems, air, hydraulic, and brake systems.
- Performs repair of vehicles, other equipment, bridges, signs, posts, guardrails, culverts, and other welding projects. Repairs and services tools and equipment. Repairs equipment using cutting torch, electric welder, and gas welder as required.
- Maintains welding equipment, drill presses, grinders, welding truck, and other shop equipment.
- Changes tires on equipment; repairs damaged/deflated tires as necessary.
- Inventories, orders, and maintains stock of fabrication steel.
- Transports equipment to project sites as required.
- Adapts new equipment to meet needs of the Highway Department such as mounting plows, boxes, hydraulic pumps, valves, rams and motors.
- Routes hydraulic hoses and pipes and makes/installs hydraulic tanks.
- Repairs in shop and field mower hydraulics and mechanical components.
- Mounts brackets, repairs truck boxes, and installs hydraulic equipment and snowplows.
- Vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair as needed.
- Responds to weather situations including snow and ice events, high water, washouts, and others as directed.
- Performs preventive maintenance on highway equipment, including greasing, changing oil, and minor repairs; maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges, and spreaders.
- Responds to unforeseen emergency situations including cargo spills, traffic accidents, blocked roads, pavement buckles, and others as directed.
- Performs daily inspection and service to equipment. Maintains records of inspection and services.
- Performs minor repairs, maintenance, and preventative maintenance to assigned equipment as scheduled or directed.
- Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all County safety regulations; assists co-workers in the safe handling of equipment; ensures equipment is safely operated and driving laws are obeyed; ensures all regulations pertaining to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed.
- Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority. Follows all policies for reporting, investigating, and follow-up of equipment incidents or personal injuries.
- Cleans and maintains equipment and storage area.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED JOB COMPETENCIES
- Knowledge of welding techniques, methods and practices used in vehicle, equipment, building and bridge maintenance.
- Knowledge of welding codes, welding rods, and stress factors.
- Ability to read blueprints.
- Knowledge of hydraulic principles.
- Ability to troubleshoot, repair, and install hydraulic pumps, valves, and rams.
- Knowledge of welding characteristics of various types of metal.
- Knowledge of operation and maintenance of assigned equipment and machinery including hydraulic systems, trailers, towing, fastening and covering of loads, lifting capacities, and proper loading to meet safe and efficient weight distributions.
- Ability and skill to drive and operate mobile equipment in a safe and proper manner.
- Ability to safely load, unload, and transport equipment to and from job sites.
- Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment.
- Knowledge of legal load limits for assigned equipment and vehicles.
- Ability to safely perform flagging operations in accordance with industry guidelines.
- Ability to install and maintain traffic control devices in accordance with industry guidelines.
- Ability to operate assigned machinery and equipment skillfully and safely in close proximity to vehicular traffic, grade and alignment stakes, slopes, trucks, other construction equipment, laborers and utilities.
- Ability to safely load, unload, and transport equipment to and from job sites.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence, and Federal, State, and local regulations.
- Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits requiring minimal direction and supervision.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and concise records and reports consistent with the position.
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively in English with staff, administration, and the public in both written and verbal form.

PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, frequently requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, sitting, or crawling and reaching with hands and arms.
- Work has standard vision requirements.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
- Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Work has exposure to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including inclement weather, heavy traffic conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and work near mechanical parts.
- Work is in outside weather conditions and in a mechanical shop environment.

Secondary education/trades course in welding. (preferred)
Welders are required to furnish their own hand/power tools and portable toolboxes. (required)
Employment will be conditional upon successful completion of the following pre-employment drug test and criminal background check. (required)
Work Zone Safety Training, MSHA, confined space, hazmat, forklift certification, first aid, and CPR, may be required upon hire based upon assignment of equipment. (required)
Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement. (required)
One year certificate/diploma from accredited welding program and three (3) years work experience in welding, machine shop and service, repair and rebuilding of construction equipment and machinery; or a high school diploma/equivalent with five (5) years' work experience in welding, machine shop and service, repair and rebuilding of construction equipment and machinery. Equivalent combination of education and experience which provides necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. (required)
