Job Summary

The Process Safety Team Leader II provides advanced leadership and technical expertise to ensure effective implementation of OSHA PSM and EPA RMP programs within the manufacturing site. This role drives regulatory compliance, risk reduction, and process safety culture by leading PHAs, overseeing MOC and PSSR processes, maintaining critical process safety documentation, and supporting safe and reliable operations.
The position collaborates closely with Operations, Engineering, and Maintenance to identify process hazards, implement mitigation strategies, and support continuous improvement of safety systems. Responsibilities include conducting or facilitating hazard analyses, leading incident investigations, ensuring quality and timely completion of PSM elements, delivering process safety training, and supporting capital project safety reviews.
The ideal candidate has 8+ years of experience in chemical manufacturing or process safety-related roles, strong knowledge of PSM/RMP requirements, and the ability to coach teams while influencing across departments. This role is key to promoting safe operations, maintaining compliance, and strengthening IFF's overall process safety performance.

Process Safety Site Leader II is expected to provide leadership, technical expertise, and coordination for the site's Process Safety Management (PSM) activities. This role ensures compliance with regulatory and company process safety standards, supports safe and reliable operations, and drives continuous improvement across manufacturing units and capital projects.

The position partners closely with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Pilot Plant, and corporate EHS to identify and mitigate process safety risks, strengthen safety culture, and ensure effective implementation of process safety systems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 PSM and EPA RMP elements.

  • Ensure timely completion, documentation, and quality of process safety programs including PHA, MOC, PSSR, mechanical integrity, incident investigation, and operating procedures.

  • Serve as the primary contact for internal and external audits related to process safety; develop and track corrective action plans.

  • Maintain deep knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements affecting process safety.

  • Facilitate or lead Process Hazard Analyses (HAZOP, FMEA, WhatIf, LOPA) for existing operations, new processes, and capital projects.

  • Conduct risk assessments to identify and prioritize mitigation strategies; support implementation through collaboration with Operations and Engineering.

  • Review process design changes, engineering drawings, and safetycritical systems for compliance with PSM standards.

  • Oversee the Management of Change (MOC) process, ensuring proper evaluation, approvals, and documentation for changes to processes, chemicals, and equipment.

  • Lead PreStartup Safety Reviews (PSSRs) to ensure safe commissioning of new or modified equipment.

  • Maintain accurate process safety documentation such as P&IDs, PFDs, process descriptions, relief system design information, and safe operating limits.

  • Develop and deliver process safety training for operators, maintenance personnel, engineers, and leadership.

  • Coach cross-functional teams to strengthen understanding and implementation of process safety principles.

  • Support initiatives to foster a positive process safety culture aligned with IFF values and safety expectations.

  • Lead or support investigations of process safety incidents and near misses; drive root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.

  • Track and analyze leading and lagging process safety metrics; identify trends and recommend preventive actions.

Technical Expertise & Continuous Improvement

  • Provide expert technical support on process safety design, safe work practices, relief systems, and hazard controls.

  • Work closely with Engineering on capital projects to ensure compliance with process safety requirements throughout project lifecycle.

  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives to strengthen reliability, risk reduction, and regulatory compliance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, or related technical field required.

  • Advanced degree preferred.

Experience

  • 8+ years of experience in process safety, chemical manufacturing, or EHS-related roles.

  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, NFPA codes, API standards, and Responsible Care principles.

  • Experience leading PHAs, HAZOPs, LOPA and/or other hazard analysis methodologies strongly preferred.

  • Prior team leadership or project leadership experience preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical, problemsolving, and rootcause investigation capabilities.

  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence without direct authority.

  • Solid communication skills for technical and nontechnical audiences.

  • Proficiency with process safety software tools (PHAPro, PHAWorks, or equivalent).

  • Proficiency with MOC software tools (ETQ, Intelex, Cority or equivalent).

Strong organizational skills; ability to manage multiple programs and priorities
