DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will participate in a in a one-year formal and on-the-job training program, where you will learn how to review air quality permits, inspect facilities, and help ensure companies follow state and federal air pollution rules. You will also support investigations, sampling programs, and communication with the public and other agencies.

  • Review Permit Applications: Assist with evaluating plans for new or modified air pollution sources and check that they meet state and federal requirements.
  • Inspect Facilities: Visit sites with staff to observe equipment, check operations, and ensure pollution controls are working properly.
  • Support Enforcement Work: Help investigate air pollution problems, write reports, and recommend solutions to bring facilities into compliance.
  • Assist With Air Sampling: Help plan and review air sampling programs to determine whether air quality standards are being met.
  • Prepare Technical Documents: Draft memos, review notes, and other materials used for permits, reports, and public communication.
  • Participate in Training and Meetings: Attend training, meetings, and inspections with other DEP offices, and maintain required records and reports.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Pittsburgh. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $66,328 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in the field of engineering; or
  • One year of engineering experience, and possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position will require possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
