About us

One team. Global challenges. Infinite opportunities. At Viasat, we're on a mission to deliver connections with the capacity to change the world. For more than 35 years, Viasat has helped shape how consumers, businesses, governments and militaries around the globe communicate. We're looking for people who think big, act fearlessly, and create an inclusive environment that drives positive impact to join our team.

What you'll do

As our dedicated Security Engineer for the Global Mobility Labs, you will be the foundational architect and "Security Champion" for our most innovative research environments. You will bridge the gap between modern Lab and corporate IT standards, ensuring that our global lab footprint is resilient against evolving threats without sacrificing the speed of innovation. This is an outstanding, high-impact role where you will balance hands-on technical hardening with the development of lab-specific security policies that protect Viasat's high-value intellectual property and core network.

The day-to-day

Establish Global Security Oversight: Build and lead the security strategy for our mobility labs across all global locations, moving the organization from zero-coverage to a proactive, hardened security posture.

  • Secure New Technologies: Conduct comprehensive security reviews and technical assessments of experimental hardware, software, and 5G/SATCOM technologies before they are coordinated into the lab environment.
  • Vulnerability & Patch Management: Orchestrate the full lifecycle of vulnerability discovery and remediation, ensuring that diverse and specialized lab systems are patched and hardened against lateral movement.
  • Policy Development: Translate foundational corporate security principles into practical, lab-specific policies that enable researchers to work efficiently while maintaining strict electronic security controls.
  • Bridge the Gap: Serve as the primary liaison between the Mobility Labs and the Corporate IT Security team, ensuring global operations remain aligned with enterprise-wide security mandates.
  • Operational Defense: Monitor the lab environment for emerging threats, implement network security controls (firewalls, IDS, access controls), and act as the lead for any lab-specific security incidents.
  • Promote a Security Culture: Act as an advocate for security procedures within the R&D teams, providing guidance and training to foster a "secure-by-design" mentality across the innovation pipeline.

What you'll need

  • Experience: 5+ years in a hands-on security engineering role, preferably within a research and development (R&D), lab, or high-tech manufacturing environment.
  • Technical Proficiency: Deep expertise in vulnerability management and remediation, including experience with tools like Nessus, Qualys, or Rapid7, and the ability to manage sophisticated patch lifecycles across diverse OS environments (Linux, Windows, etc.).
  • Network Security: Strong understanding of network architecture, including hands-on experience configuring and maintaining firewalls, IDS/IPS, and secure access controls (VPN, Zero Trust).
  • Policy & Governance: Proven ability to translate high-level corporate security mandates into practical, technical SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) that work in a fast-paced lab setting.
  • Security Champion Mentality: Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills. You must be able to advocate for security procedures in a way that enables-rather than hinders-innovation and speed.
  • Problem-Solving Agility: The ability to secure "non-standard" or experimental hardware and software that doesn't always fit into traditional corporate IT boxes.

What will help you on the job

  • Relevant Certifications: CISSP, GSEC, CEH, or specific network/cloud security certifications (CCNA Security, AWS/Azure Security).

  • Telecommunications Knowledge: Familiarity with 5G /WIMAX architecture, SATCOM technologies, or RF (Radio Frequency) security.

  • Global Experience: Experience managing security for geographically distributed teams or lab facilities.

  • Incident Response: Experience with forensic investigation tools and incident response protocols in a networked environment.
