Summary

The GIS Technician I/II/III provides mapping services and related information to various departments company-wide and outside entities for a geographical area using specialized software. Completes all work assigned with minimal supervision and instruction and an understanding of where and how to adhere to priority and turnaround time frames. Operates interfacing computer programs, reads/interprets blueprints/engineering drawings, and manipulates/understands digital data to be managed and entered into the database. Possesses moderate knowledge of mapping techniques/procedures and drafting standards. Has ability to read and interpret inter-discipline drawings.

Minimum Requirements

Level I



  • High school degree/GED plus six (6) months GIS experience. Must have successfully completed a GIS course


.Level II



  • A four-year Bachelors degree in Geography, Cartography or GIS from an accredited college or university. OR, two-year Associates degree in Geography, Cartography or GIS plus two (2) years job-related experience. OR, high school diploma/GED plus four (4) years job related experience. Job related experience shall be in GIS database/mapping (e.g., routine data management, cartography, and some spatial analysis).


Level III



  • A four-year year Bachelors degree in Geography, Cartography or GIS from an accredited college or university plus two (2) years job related experience. OR, two-year Associates degree in Geography, Cartography or GIS plus four (4) years job related experience. OR, high school diploma/GED plus six (6) years job related experience. Job related experience shall be in GIS database/mapping (e.g., routine data management, cartography, and some spatial analysis). Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications:
  • Proficiency with GIS data digitization and attribution.
  • Understanding of geodatabase design.
  • Proficient in ArcMap, ArcPro, ArcFM, Microsoft Office software, SharePoint, and other related technologies.
  • Knowledge of Maximo, Customer Care and Billing (CC&B), WebDMD applications.
  • General knowledge of Utility or APS mapping standards and practices

Major Accountabilities

1) With oversight, enters transmission and distribution facility information into the GIS database. Ensures accurate and complete positioning/status of new electric facility locations in the GIS with thought to relation of; existing facilities, active work, and associated integrated systems (ADMS, CYME, CCB) status and functionality.

2) With oversight, determines and learns acceptance of data conversion from multiple sources into the GIS by ensuring accuracy, completeness, and adherence to source documents and adherence to Quality Assurance/Quality Control rules and network connectivity rules.

3) Inputs and maintains with understanding job status(s) in current work management systems (SharePoint, Maximo) to ensure all information is current daily.

4) With oversight, maintains database using simple queries to ensure attributes of all equipment are identified and correct.
