DESCRIPTION

Academic Affairs is the largest of the Vice Chancellor areas at UC San Diego. Led by the Executive Vice Chancellor (EVC), it comprises seven academic divisions and schools, eight (8) undergraduate colleges, the University Libraries and the Division of Extended Studies. The Vice Chancellor area also includes academic support units, as well as the units under the purview of the Vice Chancellor Student Affairs and Vice Chancellor for Organizational Transformation. The Office of the EVC is responsible for policy and procedure communication and implementation, resource administration, training and guidance, and program development for administrators, faculty, and staff within the EVC areas.

Under the direction of the Director of Student Services and Community Engagement, the Student Life Specialist is responsible for the development, assessment and management of student life programs and activities that foster positive student development, inclusion, belonging, and student success for both new and continuing students at the UC San Diego - Chula Vista site, located on the campus of Southwestern College. The Student Life Specialist also oversees student leadership development and support programs for students enrolled in courses offered in Chula Vista, including oversight of a peer ambassador program that provides mentoring and support. Additionally, the Student Life Specialist advises individual students and student organizations and implements student conduct procedures. The Student Life Specialist also has a variety of administrative responsibilities, including specified campus-wide obligations. The Student Life Specialist contributes significantly to the development of student affairs programs that complement and enrich the academic vision of the UC San Diego - Chula Vista program that foster an active, involved, and inclusive community.

  • This position involves shared office space in Southwestern College's University Center. Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. This position requires attendance at and participation in an extensive array of student activities and programs, many of which occur on evenings and weekends. A hybrid work schedule is available, but flexibility is crucial.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization. A demonstrated understanding of national trends and best practices in student leadership and development theories, models, and philosophies, as well as the ability to effectively organize learning opportunities that are consistent with stages of student development.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in planning, organizing, implementing, and coordinating creative, successful, well-attended social, cultural, and educational programs, activities, and events.

  • A working knowledge of assessment strategies, including student learning outcomes. Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem-solving, identifying measures of system performance, and the actions to improve performance.

  • Demonstrated experience working cooperatively, efficiently, and effectively with a wide range of constituents, including students, family members, staff, and faculty.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal, group, cross-cultural communication, and leadership skills. The ability to lead and to promote leadership among diverse student populations, and to facilitate effective group activities.

  • Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Ability to meet deadlines, to work effectively individually and as part of a team, and to remain flexible in a strong service and results-oriented environment while providing imagination and creative solutions.

  • Demonstrated strong organizational, planning, and time management skills to handle multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.

  • Strong knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Demonstrated level of commitment to regularly update and maintain technology skills.

  • Familiarity with and understanding of student needs and concerns. The ability to research, evaluate, assess, and find solutions for changing student needs.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $60,300 - $103,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.88 - $49.76

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
