Departmental Overview

The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned teaching and research facility at one of the nation's premier public universities. A highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 30,000 undergraduate students, over 11,000 graduate students, and 1,500 faculty. With a collection of more than 13 million volumes and a collections budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills.

The Access Services Division has leadership for planning and coordinating access and circulation policies and procedures across the UC Berkeley Library.

Additionally, the Access Services Division consists of the following units - Library Privileges, Doe/Moffitt Information and Welcome Services Desks, Newspapers/Microforms Library and Current Periodicals, and Doe/Moffitt Circulation Services, and Stacks Maintenance.

The Doe/Moffitt Circulation and Gardner Stacks unit is the largest circulation services unit in the Library System, handling more than one million circulation transactions annually and the loan of electronic devices. The Gardner (MAIN) Stacks collection management includes daily oversight and strategic planning for a 2.7 million volume collection housed on campus and retrieval for the 3 million volumes of the collection shelved at the SLF-N. This unit controls access to the Gardner (MAIN) Stacks, group study rooms, and 65 Doe (Medium Rare collection).

Position Summary

The Evening/Weekend Circulation Assistant position supports 24-hour circulation services to enrolled students, faculty, staff and non-UC affiliated cardholders. The incumbent in this position supports all duties associated with providing access to the collections. The incumbent explains and interprets library policies and procedures as necessary. They provide support and serve as workleader to student employees working late night/early morning shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and provides support for circulation and public services.
  • Serves as work leader to student employees and directs and ensures work and special projects are completed during shifts.
  • Coordinates workflows with staff in the division.
  • Provides feedback to circulation supervisors related to job performance of student employees assigned to evening and weekend hours.
  • Serves as primary resource for questions, overrides or emergencies from student staff during evening and weekend hours.
  • Employs independent judgement to manage difficult patron interactions, security and medical emergencies, alarms or other disruptive situations with professionalism and tact.
  • Maintains a regular assignment on the Privileges Desk; issues library cards and establishes borrowing privileges, collects library fines and fees and resolves questions regarding billing or borrowing issues.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to work nights and weekends. The schedule is Sunday-Thursday 5:30pm - 2:30am, with daytime hours Monday-Friday during summer and intersessions.
  • Experience providing high-quality customer service at a circulation desk, other library public service desks or equivalent customer service retail experience.
  • Commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all library users.
  • Ability to learn quickly and perform tasks independently and accurately.
  • Experience working on team projects in an academic setting.
  • Experience with online library catalogs.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks with interruptions.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, problem-solving, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Applicants for positions in the Library Assistant series are expected to possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the positions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with an integrated library system and working knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system.
  • Knowledge of library circulation policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain composure under pressure while always exhibiting courtesy.
  • Ability to work in a PC environment including experience with Microsoft Office and Google products.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $27.69 (Step 1) - $28.91 (Step 3).

  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position that is eligible for UC Benefits.
  • This is a non-exempt, biweekly-paid position.

  • This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Clerical & Allied Services Unit (CX) between the University of California and Teamsters Local 2010.   • This is not a visa opportunity. This position does not include sponsorship of a new consular H-1B visa petition that would require payment of the $100,000 supplemental fee.
