This position will involve teaching lecture and laboratory sections for BIO 201 and BIO 202, Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II. Instruction, supervision, and evaluation in traditional, hybrid, and online formats should align with SCC's institutional learning outcomes to prepare a diverse student body for careers in nursing and allied health. This position will require the use of multiple methods and modalities of instruction, assessment, and appropriate technologies to engage students, promote student success, and enhance course completion while demonstrating a commitment to rigorous curriculum. Such strategies for teaching and learning should be innovative while remaining current with best practices in the field to develop and implement updated instructional materials. To best serve the students, department, and college, this position requires a physical presence on campus, with the possibility of partial remote work depending on business needs. Essential Functions Supervises and instructs students of various ages and diverse backgrounds in classroom, online, and lab settings. Instructing students in Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II courses, with an emphasis on developing the students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This includes utilizing various teaching methods to promote effective learning in students with diverse abilities, levels of academic preparation, ages, and socio-economic/cultural backgrounds. Designs and develops written syllabi/course outlines, curricula, and instructional materials for lab and lecture. This includes evaluating students' comprehension of the subject matter being taught by preparing and grading assignments, projects, quizzes, and exams. Maintains and reports information as prescribed by college policies and procedures; supervises students and resolves classroom problems. Utilizes Canvas and appropriate teaching platforms for course administration in all modalities: in-person, hybrid, and online. May provide guidance, support, and instruction to students in co-curricular settings, such as student organizations/clubs. Maintains office hours to assist and advise students; participates in department, campus, and district-wide committees. Holding academic support hours for students, with the purpose of answering questions that students may have over the subject matter being taught. Participates in department, division, college, and district activities, including departmental meetings, college-wide academic meetings, and official functions scheduled by the administration. Contributes to college governance by serving on college and/or district committees. Contributes to unit planning, curriculum, assessment, and college institutional effectiveness efforts. Collaborates with faculty, lab staff, tutors, and other student support services. Participates in professional development to stay current with new trends and developments in the field of Anatomy and Physiology, Biology, and teaching and learning. Minimum Qualifications A faculty may qualify with the following: Master's degree or higher in the teaching field Instructional Council (IC): Biology Faculty Service Area (FSA): Biology Subjects: BIO The following disciplines meet the requirements to teach in this field: A. Master's degree or higher in a biology discipline. Biology (biological sciences, life sciences, BIO) is a basic research lab science discipline such as cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, anatomy, microbiology, marine biology, zoology, botany, ecology, developmental, evolutionary, neurobiology, and other disciplines or subfields approved by the Biology Instructional Council. OR B. Master's degree or higher in an applied biology discipline. Applied biology includes public health (epidemiology, nutrition, environmental health, biostatistics), bioengineering, biotechnology, environmental science, conservation biology, wildlife management, exercise physiology, pathology, nutrition science, and other applied biology disciplines or subfields approved by the Biology Instructional Council. OR C. Master's degree or higher in medicine or health care including graduate or professional degrees such as MD, DO, DDS/DMD, DPM, DVM, PA, DPT, DC, ND, MBChB or MBBS, and other health care-related disciplines approved by the Biology Instructional Council. Requires transcript evaluation by the hiring committee. OR D. Master's degree or higher in biology education, science education or secondary education with 18 semester graduate credits in biology and/or applied biology courses (see criteria A and B). The required 18 credits of graduate coursework may include up to 6 semester hours of science teaching methods courses. Requires transcript evaluation by the hiring committee. PhD or M.S., or equivalent, degree in biological sciences and 12 credit hours in upper division coursework relevant to the teaching of anatomy and physiology. A degree would include research at the molecular, cellular, or organismal level. B. Demonstrated teaching experience, preferably at the community college level, utilizing a variety of delivery formats including in-person, online, live online, hybrid, and short-term/accelerated courses. C. Demonstrated experience teaching lab and lecture in Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II (BIO 201 and BIO 202) or equivalent courses at the college level, preferably within the last five (5) years. D. Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience with the use of human remains, dissection specimens, and cadavers, especially when teaching Native American student groups. E. Demonstrated experience developing college-level course curriculum and assessments following best practices, preferably in anatomy and physiology. F. Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and service to the department and college. G. Demonstrated experience using technology and/or Open Educational Resources (OER) to engage students, in in-person and online settings. H. One year of full-time, relevant MCCCD experience within the previous two years.
