Job Summary


This job requires technical skills but also patient care skills, knowledge of physical anatomy, effective communication, and collaboration as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to, sole responsibility for ensuring that all procedural equipment and supplies are present, clean and in working order pre, intra and post procedure. Assisting medical staff pre, intra and post procedure with various duties including collecting, and preserving specimens and proper disposal of any specimens in accordance with regulatory standards and positioning patients. Responsible for cleaning and high-level disinfection of endoscopes as well as associated instruments. The ability to identify when equipment needs repair, preparation of equipment and devices, maintaining electronic equipment and following appropriate repair protocols. Other duties include maintaining accurate records, restocking rooms and maintaining and stocking consumable supply par levels.


Responsible for performing duties and assisting with training of GI Technician I and GI Technician II in all areas of their scope of responsibility to include but not limited to; Endoscope reprocessing, procedural support, equipment setup and support as well as well as an advanced knowledge of consumable procedural and reprocessing supplies.

Demonstrates excellent communication skills and works closely with management to implement change management and staff development opportunities. This position requires the flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $43.54-$54.30/hr. (Experienced based).

Department Description

The GI Unit provides direct patient care for patients undergoing elective, urgent and emergent endoscopic and related procedures in collaboration with licensed medical staff.

Required Qualifications


  • Two years GI procedural technician experience
  • High School diploma; or equivalent experience
  • Possess and maintain current certification as a Flexible Endoscope Re-processor Certification through an accredited organization (International Association of Healthcare Central Services and Materials Management (IAHCSMM); or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CBSPD)
  • Successfully completes the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) GI Advanced Associates Certification Program
  • Advanced knowledge of, and demonstrated skill to apply, practices, principles and techniques related to area of GI Endoscopy
  • Assists with performing scope responsible duties and is able to support all responsibilities on a GI Technician 1 and GI Technician 2
  • Knowledge of all areas in Endoscopy including:
    • Decontamination
    • Inspection, Assembly & Packaging
    • Sterilization of Packaged Medical Devices
    • QC record keeping
    • Preparation and Distribution of High-Level Disinfected products
    • Proficient in assisting in all Endoscopy procedures including Advanced
    • Endoscopy, General GI, Pediatrics as well as the ability to precept those who are in training
  • Demonstrate skill set and experience with Advanced Endoscopy procedures
  • Demonstrate knowledge of SGNA and AGA and AAMI guidelines, and principles of asepsis
  • Demonstrated ability to competently perform multiple, complex tasks
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to communicate with physician, nursing, technical, and medical staff
  • Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful clinic environment exists at all times
  • Ability to work under pressure to troubleshoot equipment during endoscopy cases
  • Ability to set priorities, organize work independently and to follow work through to completion
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language and utilize equipment manuals, reference materials, and medical terminology to effectively complete job functions
  • Ability to recognize equipment and equipment malfunction to effectively trouble shoot, learn equipment processing routines, and maintain accurate equipment inventory
  • Ability to safely support the use of chemical compositions used within the Endoscopy Department, in accordance with the Manufactures instructions for use
  • Ability to recognize medical supplies, their use, and daily/monthly usage to correlate with recording cycles as required on the unit as well as understand related reference materials
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships
  • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain a friendly, welcoming environment for clinics customers; to demonstrate an interested, understanding, compassionate and caring manner; to maintain a courteous and calm demeanor; and to use a pro-active approach to negotiate with and persuade others to take required action
  • Ability to maintain composure, efficiency and a positive, customer-service oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines, and when interacting with challenging customers who may be ill, angry, or emotionally distressed
  • Decision making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to take action, and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached
  • Basic knowledge of computer systems including Windows OS, keyboard and mouse operations
  • Skills to organize and maintain records
  • This position requires the flexibility to work On-Call hours and floating to Moffit Long Endoscopy, Mt Zion Endoscopy, and Mission Bay Endoscopy
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience as an Advanced Endoscopy Procedural Technician to include Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR), fine needle aspiration, cytology brushing, celiac plexus neurolysis, pancreatic cyst drainage, laser therapy, Spyglass, specimen handling, endoscope manipulation, Double Balloon and single balloon Enteroscopy, Esophageal and colonic (balloon or Bougie) dilation, cryotherapy, set and advanced suturing
  • Detailed knowledge of medical terminology, departmental policies and procedures, and regulatory standards and leading industry practices
  • Knowledge of standard precautions infection control standards and prevention of cross contamination

License/Certification


  • Possess and maintain current certification as a Flexible Endoscope Re-processor Certification through an accredited organization (International Association of Healthcare Central Services and Materials Management (IAHCSMM); or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CBSPD)
