Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The NODA (Association for Orientation, Transition, and Retention in Higher Education) Intern for Transition Programs will provide support for first-year, transfer, and family & guest orientation, and will assist in developing additional programming and communication logistics for other department programs. Some evenings and weekends will be required. Orientation is held in May and June, with project-based work to support other department programs taking place in July.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work as part of a team to facilitate one-day orientation programs for 3200 first-year students, 1500 transfer students, and their guests in May and June
  • Oversee Early Arrival program set up, check-in and social activities the night prior to each session
  • Serve as on-call primary point of contact when Orientation students are on campus and communicate with Assistant Director as appropriate
  • Assist in training, supervising, and scheduling approximately 30 undergraduate Orientation Leaders
  • Assist with orientation session prep, including but not limited to name tags, rosters, etc.
  • Coordinate accessibility reports and follow up as needed with students and guests
  • Collect and report student and guest orientation survey data
  • Assist in developing fall programming calendar for Seahawks First programs (Scholarship Program, Learning Community, National First Gen Week) and assist in logistics coordination
  • Compile data for Seahawks First program, including updating records/spreadsheets, managing student information, and collecting data on scholarship recipients
  • Support event planning and communication logistics for key office programs to include Family Weekend and New Student Convocation
  • Other duties as assigned


The NODA intern will also have the opportunity to connect and meet with professional staff members in Student Engagement, Enrollment and Retention ( SEER), Student Affairs and/or Academic Affairs to learn more about working in various departments at UNCW, if interested.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and time-management skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including writing and proofreading
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Flexibility and adaptability, with the ability to adjust priorities and responsibilities in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Comfort presenting to and engaging with diverse audiences
  • Experience in student leadership, involvement, or related campus roles
  • Commitment to providing student-centered customer service


Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Interest or previous experience in the field of orientation, transition, and retention
  • Experience in program and event planning and implementation
  • Experience in student supervision
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365
  • Experience in Qualtrics survey software
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or Canva Design

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of Transition Programs is part of the Division of Student Affairs at UNCW. Transition Programs provides a comprehensive array of programs designed to meet undergraduate students' and families' unique needs from orientation through graduation, fostering student and family engagement that centers on student success and retention. The programs supported by Transition Programs include services for first-generation students, new student and family orientation, a peer mentor program for first-year students (Seahawk Links), transfer student programs, convocation, family weekend, and commencement.
