Research Associate /Technician - 138679

Under supervision, the Research Associate/Technician will research support in a laboratory specializing in isolation of human liver cells. Responsible for ordering supplies and specialized lab equipment, and ensuring proper operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment, as well as negotiate and initiate maintenance contracts and repairs. Serves as the laboratory safety officer of the human liver cell isolation lab to ensure safe work practices as dictated by EH&S guidelines, including handling of chemical and biohazardous, materials. Manages a large and complex mouse colony inventory, and coordinates the transfer of specialized mouse strains to other UCSD and outside investigators (domestic and internationally). Provide technical assistances to the transgenic mouse experiments and may make innovative contributions to transgenic mouse experiments as they gain experience in the role. Assists in the writing and preparation of scientific manuscripts, Animal Subjects Protocols, Biohazardous Use Authorizations, and Material Transfer Agreements. Provides direction and trains other lab personnel in laboratory techniques. Other duties assigned as needed.

• Theoretical knowledge and expertise in a biological science, physiology, biochemistry, immunology or related field to perform molecular biological techniques as typically attained through a Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.

• Strong demonstrated experience in animal work, including breeding genetically manipulated mouse colonies, genotyping by PCR, experience monitoring breeding activities, and performing humane euthanasia.

• Demonstrated expertise in transgenic/knockout mice biology and experience designing and executing breeding strategies for creating specialized strains.

• Demonstrated experience with standard and non standard laboratory equipment including centrifuges, spectrophotometers, balances, pH meters, electrophoresis equipment, specialized microscopes and PCR machines.

• Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment, showing initiative and resourcefulness when making decisions.

• Demonstrated experience utilizing computer software to analyze data, store results and compute raw data. Willingness to work with and learn new software for analysis.

• Demonstrated experience with basic computer applications including Word Processing, MS Word, Excel Spreadsheets, and Power Point.

• Demonstrated experience with negotiating, purchasing, and maintenance of specialized lab equipment and supplies including creating and maintaining relationships with vendors.

• Demonstrated experience in proper handling of chemical and biohazard materials.

• Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory safety rules.

• Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research.

• Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) in order to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment.

• Ability to read, comprehend, present and discuss research materials.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality.

• Ability to adhere to established guidelines for safety and environmental issues.

• Demonstrated experience making laboratory reagents and solutions.

• Understanding of UC and government regulations regarding the handling of animals and biohazardous material.

• Demonstrated knowledge of liver cell types, both mouse and human.

• Demonstrated experience in isolation of liver cells from mouse and human livers.

• Must be willing to work with small animals.

• Must be willing to work with biohazard level II materials and radioisotopes.

• Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
