Position Summary As a Structural Designer I at HED, you will be an emerging design professional focused on learning and applying foundational engineering skills within an integrated team environment. Under direct guidance, you will support the structural engineering team in the design and documentation of building systems across a variety of project types. This position is ideal for early-career professionals looking to grow their technical acumen, develop proficiency in core software tools, and contribute meaningfully to the successful delivery of thoughtful, sustainable, and impactful design solutions aligned with HED's integrated practice. Essential Functions:
- Assist in the development of structural design documents including framing plans, sections, and details under supervision.
- Perform basic structural analysis and calculations using engineering software tools such as Enercalc, RISA, ETABS and RAM.
- Support the coordination of structural design with other disciplines including architecture, MEP, and civil teams.
- Participate in project meetings and coordination sessions to understand workflow, design objectives, and technical standards.
- Contribute to building information modeling (BIM) production using Revit.
- Review applicable building codes and standards under supervision to ensure compliance.
- Conduct material quantity take-offs and assist with the preparation of construction documents.
- Seek opportunities to learn and apply sustainable and innovative structural design principles.
- Maintain organized project documentation and follow quality control procedures.
- Perform ad hoc tasks and responsibilities as assigned to support team and project needs.
- Work in different sectors to gain experience as a generalist.
- Engage in DWP process including tracking time required to complete tasks.
- Perform other ad hoc duties as assigned by the Discipline Leader or project lead.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering or similar related field, from an ABET/EAC accredited institution.
- Good written and verbal communication skills; commensurate with the position.
- Working knowledge or academic exposure to structural design tools: Revit (core), RAM, RISA, ETABS, Enercalc or similar.
- Familiarity with building codes, industry standards, and engineering fundamentals.
- Detail-oriented, self-motivated, enthusiastic, flexible.
- Ability to work well with others under deadline situations.
- EIT certification or progress toward obtaining it preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to effectively communicate in writing and verbally via phone, video conferencing, and in-person.
- Visual acuity to perform responsibilities.
