This senior leadership role within the UnitedHealth Group (UHG) Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety (EOHS) organization serves as the enterprise authority for environmental compliance and industrial hygiene. The Associate Director leads the Global Environmental & Industrial Hygiene Center of Excellence (COE), providing strategic direction, advanced technical expertise, and governance to ensure regulatory compliance, risk reduction, and operational excellence across all UHG business operations.

Reporting directly to the Director of Global EOHS COE, the Associate Director is a key member of the EOHS leadership team and acts as UHG's foremost expert in environmental regulatory frameworks, exposure science, industrial hygiene methodologies, and environmental risk management. This role is responsible for designing and deploying the systems, standards, and enterprise programs that enable consistent environmental stewardship and protection of worker health.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Environmental, Health and Safety Leadership
    • Provide expert technical direction for all enterprise environmental compliance programs, including air emissions, wastewater, hazardous materials, waste management, and environmental permitting
    • Lead the enterprise industrial hygiene strategy, including exposure assessment, monitoring protocols, sampling strategies (air, water, surface, noise), and control methodologies
    • Establish governance for indoor environmental quality across office, operational, and high-risk environments
    • Oversee development and maintenance of hazardous and regulated waste programs
  • Program Strategy, Governance & Systems:
    • Develop and execute the enterprise environmental and industrial hygiene strategy
    • Leverage data analytics and technology to enhance environmental risk visibility
    • Lead creation and maintenance of policies, standards, and technical guidance
  • Risk Management & Regulatory Responsibilities:
    • Direct environmental and industrial hygiene risk assessments and compliance evaluations
    • Manage regulatory relationships and ensure timely submission of required reports, permits, and notifications
    • Maintain expert-level knowledge of applicable environmental and occupational regulations
  • Leadership, Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Lead and develop a high-performing team of environmental and industrial hygiene professionals
    • Oversee third-party consultants and vendors
    • Collaborate with internal partners across the enterprise
    • Develop and report enterprise environmental and industrial hygiene metrics
  • Additional Responsibilities:
    • Conduct site visits and field evaluations
    • Manage budgets, resource planning, and long-range capability development
    • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in EHS, with deep knowledge in Environmental Compliance & Industrial Hygiene
  • 3+ years of direct or indirect leadership of high-performing technical teams
  • Demonstrated success influencing cross-functional stakeholders
  • Proven solid analytical and systems skills
  • Proven excellent communication skills
  • Ability to travel as required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree or professional credentials (CIH, CSP, CHMM, PE, or equivalent)
  • Experience in large, complex, or highly regulated industries
  • Demonstrated success leading organizational change and scaling programs
  • Reside in or near Eden Prairie, MN as this is the preferred location

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $112,700 to $193,200 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
